How's the biking in and around Boquete, Panama?

Biking is very common in Boquete, for transportation or as a sport. My husband and I are in a group of Panamanians who ride mountain bikes and road bikes; both are great here.
Car drivers in Chiriquí (the province in which Boquete is located) are the most educated in the country regarding bicycle riders, which makes biking very safe. We also know expats who bike every day in small groups. We also see tourists traveling by bike...

If you've got a mountain bike and need to challenge yourself (with some truly breathtaking scenery as your reward), I would recommend biking around Cielo Paraiso. There are some healthy trails there and it is just stunning to look at.

Bicycle riding is a growing activity nowadays in Chiriquí Province, Panama, including Boquete. The road conditions may vary from one place to another, but it is normally safe. Mostly on Saturdays and Sundays you will see several groups of riders on the roads (much older, of course, than the girl in the picture).

ABIMOCHI (Asociación de Bicicletas Montañeras y de ruta) is one of the biggest cycling clubs. You can check their Facebook page and see all their photos.

In Boquete, I can see people biking together in large groups. Periodically, there are bike events here in Boquete and down in the city of David (about 40 minutes away by car) where they block some parts of the road. Since the town itself is surrounded by hills and mountains, I’m sure that mountain bikers will really enjoy the technical trails that are challenging and physical.

Whenever I am driving my car towards David, I can see some of the mountain bikers on the paved highway. Personally, I can’t believe that some people would really take their bikes to and from David knowing that the distance between the two places is 18-20 miles. Down the hill would be easy but going back would be very difficult. (See the picture above.) The reason for this is because Boquete is around 3,000 – 4,000 feet above sea level while David is much lower, very close to sea level. I can almost put the car in neutral when driving towards David. But if you are interested, then you can try riding there and back.
If you are the kind of person who’s not into any extreme type of biking, there are areas around the neighborhood here in Boquete where you can ride your bike. Also, there are bike clubs in Boquete that you can join from as well as places where you can rent a bike.

Boquete is very hilly so if you want to go biking, you have to have a mountain bike and strong legs. A lot of people go biking here but for most old people it is too strenuous. They can go downhill but how would they go uphill?
Bicycling is a big sport in Panama. There are big groups who come here. I think they are either from Costa Rica or from Panama City. They would be around 50 cyclists or more and you would see them in their cycling gear. If you are young and...

They would be around 50 cyclists or more and you would see them in their cycling gear. If you are young and you have strong legs, you can absolutely enjoy biking here in Boquete.
Street biking is done on the road because there are no bike lanes here in Boquete. It is safe but I do not suggest doing it at night when there is a lot of drunk drivers. If you want to go mountain biking, there are many places to go. Everything is uphill from downtown Boquete.
