There is no shortage of restaurants in Boquete, this mountain town of 15,000 residents. From the fancier restaurants in the resorts to the small cafes in the heart of town, you will not be disappointed!

I would challenge most Americans to find a town the size of Boqete with this many restaurants, cafes, bistros, and menu selections. While we don't have any fast food places, you can get pizza to go or take out from almost any place in town. There is always David (the closest bigger city) for the typical American Fast food: TGI Friday's, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Subway and others are just a 45 minute drive from Boquete.

I would challenge most Americans to find a town the size of Boqete with this many restaurants, cafes, bistros, and menu selections. While we don't have any fast food places, you can get pizza to go or take out from almost any place in town. There is always David (the closest bigger city) for the typical American Fast food: TGI Friday's, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Subway and others are just a 45 minute drive from Boquete.
Some of the upscale hotels in Boquete offer charming settings. Beautiful tables, plenty of ambience and the food is usually quite good. Some of the nicer restaurants here have comfortable, clean and attractive dining rooms that invite you to linger after dinner for conversation, coffee or an after dinner drink.
We have enjoyed many different cafes and restaurants in Boquete and today we enjoyed some modestly priced but very flavorful Italian food for lunch at the San Francisco Plaza in Alto Boquete. Papa Rico's Little Italy offers a diverse menu selection and some very delicious breakfasts, lunch and dinner favorites. They are open from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm.
Other places we have enjoyed are: The Baru, Macchu Pichu, The Bistro,Amigos, Sugar and Spice, and so many more that I can't remember the names or in some cases I can't spell them! There is a German restaurant in the same San Francisco Plaza as the Italian Cafe. They have the most wonderful German menu, and cakes to die for!

The following picture is of the porch area at La Risca's in Los Molinas about 15 minutes from Boquete on the Highway to David. This beautiful restaurant offers a view of the deep river canyon, the Baru Volcano, and the hotel is quite beautiful and decorated very tastefully. The food is always good and that have a bar with a breathtaking view of the canyon. These are some of the places we have enjoyed. There are many more we have yet to enjoy.

Boquete restaurants cater for all tastes and over the nine years I have been here it just gets better and better. Only this past few weeks we have had another great addition to what is on offer. Once you arrive here it won't take a few minutes to get to know where the best places are to eat. People in Boquete always seems so helpful to new arrivals.

If you want sandwiches that are made with love and care, on fresh baked bread by a chef who combines a painter's flair with a scientist's precision, this is your Canaan, your promised land.
I mean just look at this.
Perfect balance of fresh cut meats, gourmet cheeses, house sauces, and did I mention the fact that the bread is fresh baked and all are unique recipes from Chef Meyer (the genius behind the bakery) himself?
Every time I bite into a sandwich from this place it feels like a new euphoric experience. I actually feel myself rising out of my chair and floating to towards the proverbial Elysian Fields.
Don't even get me started on their pastry! My husband and I often have to draw straws when I bring home one of Sugar and Spice's DELECTABLE Chocolate Pies because we know that otherwise we will end up having an argument over who ate the last slice.

But almost all other restaurants suffer to keep the doors open. The competition keeps the prices too low, so a profit is difficult.
Even the expat community does not frequently go to eat "out". Just to mention some super restaurants, at least in my eyes, Big Daddy's Grill, Machu Picchu, La Posada and for the lunch, fresh bread or cakes, Sugar & Spice Dulces Gourmet.

There are a lot of restaurants in Boquete. There are some really good restaurants. There are some very mediocre restaurants...and there are some that are just bad, which is hard to understand, given that we live in a place where fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish are available year round.
The biggest challenges, in my opinion, that keep Boquete from being an epicurean paradise are: the differences in expectations of North Americans and Europeans regarding...
There are a lot of restaurants in Boquete. There are some really good restaurants. There are some very mediocre restaurants...and there are some that are just bad, which is hard to understand, given that we live in a place where fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish are available year round.
The biggest challenges, in my opinion, that keep Boquete from being an epicurean paradise are: the differences in expectations of North Americans and Europeans regarding service (Panamanians are not big on this...); and second, while Panama has a widely diverse multi-culturalism going, it does NOT have a history of fine cuisine. Chicken (stewed or roasted), pork chops (stewed or fried), beef (yep...), rice--LOTS of rice!--lentils, and a spot of shredded cabbage form the basic diet of the majority. It's called typica--and make no mistake, some places serve really excellent typica menus. I eat it at least twice a week. Good, cheap lunch, fast. And, there are too many places serving hamburgers, fried fish, and sandwiches, most of it all very similar and with little flare.
All that being said, there are exceptions--and in the 10 years I've been living here, the dining scene has undergone LOTs of changes and some improvements. The most recent reason to celebrate Food! is the opening of Mango's at Isla Verde. Great service, eclectic, ethnic menu prepared with flare and FLAVOR, warm ambience.
George's Fireside Grill, while constantly under construction, consistently serves excellent seafood in creative sauces in an ambience that is a bit chaotic, but always friendly.
The most elegant venue is The Panamonte Inn, which dates back to 1914. The El Salto Lounge, with its dual fireplaces, is the coziest spot in Boquete. Special wine tastings and food extravaganzas at the Panamonte are special treats.

My two favorite restaurants in Boquete are Mango in Hotel Isla Verde and Mike's Global Grill. Craig Miller is the chef at Mango -- and a genius with food. Mike's Grill is more informal, but the food is excellent. Make sure to chat with Heidi, Mike's wife, who is a gracious hostess.

Many of the restaurants in Boquete are very good. You can find anything from inexpensive buffets of Panamanian food to an excellent gourmet dinner.
One of my favorites even just for lunch (and I think they have the best soup and especially sandwiches) is the Sugar and Spice bakery. Many expats go there to have an excellent lunch.

Panamonte is a very beautiful boutique hotel were you find a delicious dishes and enjoy all the comfort it can bring you. At Panamonte I refer the breakfast, where they make my favorite-- Eggs Benedict. It’s just delicious.

There are so many to choose from,ranging from typical Panamanian food, Mexican, Peruvian, Italian, organic (Mango Restaurant ), to a very nice bakery / sandwich shop called Sugar & Spice. (I love the Hot Volcano chicken sandwich at Sugar & Spice and I also had a very good creamy chicken and veggie soup there.)
I truly recommend pretty much all the restaurants in Boquete!

The prices are a big thing to take in consideration. My best advice is to check on the menu first because you can have a VERY good meal for 7 USD (and in different types of restaurants) or you can have another very good meal for 40 USD.
There are also small typical Panamanian food restaurants which we call "fondas or fonditas" where you can get very good and traditional Panamanian food for 2-5 USD.

The best advice that I can give you is to take your time and rate the restaurants your own way. There is no better surprise than to find a good place to eat. In Panama we have a saying that goes: Full tummy means a happy heart, so with that said I wish you all to get your tummies completely full.

One of the newest restaurant / coffee shops just opened in Boquete. Its called the Perfect Pair. It's a chic coffee shop serving specialty coffees grown in Boquete matched with artisan Chocolate (Cacao) they farm in nearby Belize.
The combination of a tasty cappuccino paired with really yummy 72% cacao deserts and treats made a great combination. Its on the main street on the corner. Sorry, the pictures got locked in my phone.
