After living in Bocas del Toro, Panama for 8 years and spending most of my spare time on the water fishing I would have to say that the fishing in Bocas del Toro is challenging.

During this time of the year the swells are down and site fishing for tuna or trolling for wahoo is popular. The inshore fishing can be much more productive with many large rivers in the Bocas del Toro region. There are snook, tarpon and snapper in the river mouths just about year round.
The fishing in Bocas del Toro may not be world class but its fun and challenging and you can catch dinner!!

There are different types of fishing in Bocas del Toro. There’s off shore fishing, which is excellent thrice or four times a year. The other times, it is not as excellent. Tuna is easy to get because they usually run five miles off shore. As for the marlin and the sailfish, we have to go out 30 miles to get them.

Inshore fishing is great all year round. You can catch grouper and red snapper. You can go to the mouths of rivers and catch tarpon, which is a big sports fish in Bocas del Toro. You can also catch snook, which we call rabalo in Bocas del Toro. These are good for eating and great game fish. If you love fishing, you can definitely do different kinds of fishing at different times of the year in Bocas del Toro.
