Are there exotic birds in and around Bocas Del Toro, Panama? Where can I go bird watching in and around Bocas Del Toro, Panama?
Ian Usher - House Sitting Magazine
I'm not much of a bird watcher myself, but I have been sharing my house for the last couple of months with an exotic little family of birds.
This delightful little thing is a baby Panama Flycatcher, and for two years in a row now I have had them make a nest in my kitchen above the light fitting.
I have posted the full story under the "Stories" section of this website, along with some video updates of this year's babies leaving...

I live on a small tropical island just to the south of Bocas del Toro on Panama's Caribbean coast, and I see lots of unusual birds here.
My personal favourites are the pelicans that fish in the bay just in front of my house. Their splash into the water is often the first thing I hear when I wake up. They are so graceful when you see them skim along just inches above the water.
Parrots often pass overhead on a morning or evening.
There are also many resident birds too on my little island, but I don't know the names of them all. I have a pair of bright electric blue birds that are very shy. Hummingbirds are regular visitors to the bushes and trees by the house. One night we spotted an owl, and there is a bird I only know as "the night shrieker" I have no idea what it looks like, but it certainly makes its presence known.
I've also had woodpeckers and a pair of small birds of prey visit too.
I must go and ask my neighbours about these mystery birds - just across Dolphin Bay there is a couple who are regular bird watchers, and have a monthly email update of what they have seen in the previous weeks.
Bird watching? Bocas del Toro has plenty to offer.

We have many exotic birds in Bocas both on the mainland and on the islands. Toucans, oropendulas. sunbitterns, (see photo on the right) herons, hummingbirds and a wide variety of wading birds live here.

Although this is a happy event for birders it is not as pleasant for our free range chickens. As the owners of a lodge that specializes in bird watching and hummingbirds especially (see photo on the left) we can promise you will find many lifetime birds in our area.

Finca Los Monos (the Monkey Farm) is a privately funded garden, situated on Isla Colon, the largest island in the enchanting archipelago o of Bocas del Toro. David and Lin Gillingham arrived in Bocas sixteen years ago after years of traveling around the world in search of the perfect place to settle. They purchased the twenty acre property which was then a thick, green wall of jungle covering the rolling hills and gullies. After years of hard work, the garden is now home to a vast array of tropical plants, monkeys, native birds, fish and other wildlife.
