How are the restaurants in Bocas Del Toro, Panama?
Ingrid Lommers - Spanish at Locations
There are many very nice restaurants in Bocas del Toro. Panama. You have cheap restaurants with simple but nice food, but also more expensive restaurants. The restaurants serve typical food but there is also an Indian restaurant, an Italian restaurant and much more.

Bocas del Toro, Panama and the surrounding area has some wonderful restaurants to suit all budgets. Here are a handful worth trying, based on a couple of years' experience of living here:
In Bocas:
- Try Chitre on the main street in town for wonderful cheap local fare.
- El Lorito next to Hotel Don Chicho is a similar local place, cheap and tasty.
- Gringo's, Lili's and The Lemongrass offer many appetising choices.

- (I had the best tuna steak I have ever had at The Lemongrass)
Go a little further afield:
- Not far out of town El Beso del Dragon is a favourite with locals and ex-pats alike.
By water taxi:
- Spend a dollar or two at most to try Cosmic crab on Isla Caranero. Their Sunday lunch buffet is fantastic.
- Bibi's on the beach is a nice night out in a great location.
Slightly further:
- A water taxi will take you to Isla Bastimentos. Go before sunset and ask them to drop you off at Roots. Beautiful over-the-water location for awesome fish dinner at sunset.
Further again:
- Well, well worth the trip is Valle de las Ranas in Dolphin Bay. You may need to hire a boat driver for the afternoon or evening, but it is really worth the trip. They do the biggest burger you have ever seen, awesome chicken tacos, and beautiful fresh snapper when available
And even further again:
- Rana Azul is away down in the jungle, about forty minutes by boat from town, but Sundays from noon are the social hub of the week for ex-pats, sailors and the occasional holidaymaker.
Both pictures are of "Rana Azul" (Blue Frog) restaurant in Tierra Oscura, Bocas del Toro, Panama. The top one is of boats tied up at Sunday brunch and the bottom one was taken on Sunday afternoon. As you can see, you should get there early to get a seat!

Sunday afternoon at Los Secretos
You'll find Los Secretos restaurant about 20 minutes by boat south of Bocas del Toro in Panama. It is actually situated on Isla Bastimentos. They make great pizzas, and when they are on the menu, the pulled-pork sandwiches are delicious.
They also sell beer, and can mix up all sorts of other fancy tropical drinks too.
But to be honest, you don't come to Los Secretos for the beer and pizza, no matter how good they are. You come for the pool and the view.
And as they say, a picture says a thousand words, so I'll let these pictures of a sunny Sunday afternoon at Los Secretos do the talking.

There are lots of restaurants in Bocas Del Toro, but not fast food places. When I moved here fifteen years ago, there were forty restaurants. Now, the hotels have restaurants in addition to the numerous standalone restaurants. There are restaurants that have opened up in the island where you have to go by boat. There are little cafeterias with local food where you can get chicken, rice, beans and salad for US $3, but that is what fast food is here. There is no...

Now, the hotels have restaurants in addition to the numerous standalone restaurants. There are restaurants that have opened up in the island where you have to go by boat. There are little cafeterias with local food where you can get chicken, rice, beans and salad for US $3, but that is what fast food is here. There is no McDonald’s or Starbucks in Bocas.
Fancy restaurants and restaurants that are open-air or over the water outside of the hotel are very common. You do not have to dress up to go there. They serve entrees for about $15, which consist of chicken or beef with nice sauces.
Eating in restaurants in Bocas is not very expensive. We usually have one drink a piece and one entree a piece and we spend between $40 and $50 at the fancy restaurants. The food itself (for example, steak and lobster) is about $12 to $15 per entree for what would cost double that amount in the States.
