Are the doctors in Bocas Del Toro, Panama good?
Alberto Socarraz - Panama Vida
This is a tough question to answer, "are the doctors in Bocas del Toro, Panama good?"
From my own personal experiences I would have to say yes. The doctors in Bocas del Toro are very competent and patient but unfortunately the facilities in which they work are lacking. For most cases if you are in need of a "patch up" the doctors in Bocas del Toro are more than able. However, if you have a serious matter you should look to relocate...

For most cases if you are in need of a "patch up" the doctors in Bocas del Toro are more than able. However, if you have a serious matter you should look to relocate to Panama City or Chiriqui Province. (The town of Boquete and the city of David are in Chiriqui Province.)

Anne-Michelle Wand - United Country Bocas del Toro
A lot of the doctors in Bocas Del Toro have gone through the same training as American doctors. Some of them are even trained in America. The quality of the care is not bad. It is the same as in other places but the small hospital is not equipped for major things. This is why you need to be relatively healthy if you want to live in Bocas. People weighing 300 pounds have come here and they have to get right back on the plane and leave because they would not make it.

Over time, people leave as they get more health problems. Some people may have come here 20 years ago, when they were healthy. They may live here for 15 or 20 years, and then start to get problems. If this happens, they sell their houses and leave.
There is also a big turn that is happening for the people that came to Bocas in the 90s and early 2000's. They are starting to sell their properties now because they are getting too old to get in and out of the boats.

There are no specialists in Bocas del Toro, Panama, only general doctors. If the doctor in Bocas diagnoses something, he will tell you to go to a medical facility or physician in Chiriquí Province (where Boquete and David are located), or if needed, Panama City. David and Panama City have Panama’s best doctors and facilities.

Bocas del Toro is not a place where you want to have a heart attack. There are competent doctors that can certainly save your life, but there are more experienced doctors in David or in Panama City. If you have a serious health condition, you would want to go to the doctors located in these areas. Bocas del Toro can accommodate emergencies. You can go to clinics and hospitals in Bocas del Toro if you’re down with the flu or you cut yourself.

When you do have a heart attack or catastrophic illnesses such as appendicitis or a stroke in Bocas del Toro, the doctors here can certainly stabilize you and put you on a plane with a medical team that will take you to either David or Panama City. If your condition is not as serious, the doctors would put you on a taxi and send you to David. If you have a stroke, they would get you to Panama City as quickly as they could.
To get to Panama City from Bocas del Toro, the plane ride is about an hour. In order to get to David, you have to drive over the mountains. There are plenty of taxis and buses that constantly leave Bocas del Toro for David. First, if you are on an island in Bocas del Toro, you have to get to the mainland of Panama, then you have to drive over the mountains. The trip is about 30 minutes from Bocas to the mainland. From there, you can either ride a taxi or a bus to David. If you go by taxi, it takes you 3 hours and 30 minutes. By bus, it takes you 4 hours.
