The park was designated in order to protect marine and terrestrial habitats and marine fauna. It is one of the main destinations for visitors in Bocas del Toro. There are three large beaches in the main island of the park.
Within the park and in the surrounding islands there are a few lodges and hostels available for tourists. The boat ride from Bocas del Toro island to the marine park area is about 10 to 20 minutes.
