What are the sports and games in and around Panama?

Usually Panamá is oriented mainly to baseball, boxing and horse racing, even though the city becomes paralyzed when football ("soccer" in the US) and World Cups are played. Historically Panamá has had worldwide many famous jockeys, boxing champions (like "Mano de Piedra") and well-known baseball players (like Mariano Rivera, the New York Yankees' best player).

Panamá also holds international events on equestrian competitions, chess, and others.

The Panamanians are an outdoors-loving people and their recreational activities reflect this. There is basketball, boxing, baseball, rodeos and wrestling but above them all, the sport of kings: futbol (or "soccer" to our North American friends).
Victories and defeats on the soccer field can lead to nationwide celebration or cross-country mourning!

In Panama, it is not unusual for different sports to become very popular, where many people want to participate. For example, a very popular sports activity in Panama recently is CrossFit.

In Panama, we have many CrossFit gyms. The cheapest one will be around $100 - $120 per month, which in Panama is a lot of money for a gym membership. We have CrossFit competitions between gyms, with the best ones going to the CrossFit Games, which this year are in California.
In Panama, people are very much into healthy living, so you have people here doing marathons or triathlons, golf, and what people from the States would call soccer. American football is also popular in Panama, including leagues.
We also have baseball in Panama The provinces play against each other. Of course, Mariano Rivera is from Panama. (The picture to the right is of a stadium in David.) We also have boxing. Roberto Duran is a Panamanian.

The two most popular sports among Panamanians are football, which is the American soccer, and baseball.
Soccer is extremely popular and easy to play at any income level. You just need a ball and a couple of sticks for goal posts. Baseball is popular in Panama, especially because there are a couple of very successful Panamanians in Major League Baseball in the US.

Boxing is also popular and basketball is coming up as a popular sport, too. Soccer, baseball, and boxing are all popular spectator sports here in Panama.
Another very localized, but legal, sport here in Panama, is cockfighting. It is done especially on the weekends and more out in the countryside. It is a brutal sport and most tourists might not like it, but it is part of the culture here.

Strangely enough, most people assume that soccer is the number game yet here in Panama, yet baseball is number one but soccer is just a very close number two.
Panamanians also love basketball. My son plays on the Panamanian basketball recreational league. Baseball is everywhere. Soccer is everywhere. They play soccer in the strangest places. Deep-sea fishing is certainly a big sport here in Panama. We are getting a new marina where I live in the Coronado area, so that is going to be a huge sport. There are over 200 world records in Panama relevant to deep-sea fishing. I am not that into deep-sea fishing but I go and enjoy the sport. Lake Gatun has peacock bass and I caught 250 peacock bass in one trip recently. Kite surfing is huge. Surfing is also huge sport here.

American football has become very popular in Panama in recent years.
The Kiwanis League is very similar to Pop Warner. I'm more familiar with the Panama Flag League in which I've coached for the last 5 years. This flag football league is for adults, with both a women's and a men's league. The men's league has 22 teams each with up to 30 contracted players on a team roster.

In 2012 Panama joined international competition by competing in the World Cup with men's and women's teams. This September Panama will again be competing in the World Cup in the Bahamas.

The most popular sport in Panama is baseball. Panamanians are so good at baseball that we’re on the same level with Cuba and the Dominican Republic. There are many Panamanians who go to the United States every year to try out for the baseball teams like the Red Sox who take Panamanians the most, and other teams in the United States, in the dream of becoming Major League Baseball players.

Some of my high school friends in Panama were signed up by American universities and given scholarships as long as they play for the college team.
Another sport Panamanians like is soccer. Panama is really trying hard to get to the FIFA World Cup. It has never happened, but every year we’re closer to getting there.
Another sport that has become more and more famous during the past five years is American football. It’s surprising, but we’re the only country besides Mexico in the whole of Latin America that plays American football. There are two Panamanians playing in the United States who received scholarships for American football. Panamanians love American football and flag football. We have girl teams and boy teams in school who later become American football players. I play American flag football.
