How's the surf and surfing in and around Panama?
Judith Tovar - Easy Travel Panama
Surfing in Panama is famous...so well known that Panama has a yearly international Surfing competition in one of the beaches in Pedasi....which is in the Peninsula de Azuero area.
You will also find excellent surfing in Santa Catalina, in Bocas del Toro, and in some of the Pacific beaches not too far away from Panama City.

Surfs UP!
Yes, Venao is good for surfing.. closer to the city ("Panama City"), San Carlos.. secret spots I can't mention.. but Santa Catalina has the best break in Latin America.. and during the season, when the north wind blows.. yes, Bocas and Isla Grande (surf the Caribbean!)

Panama is gaining wide appeal as a surf spot for the truly skilled among the "Children of the Board".
Bluff Beach on Isla Colon, Silverback near Bastimentos and Isla Carenaro (all in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago) are not only beautiful spots, but also are world renowned for the size and power of their waves.

Surfing is actually world class in Panama. There are a certain number of surf breaks and they hold some international surf championships here. The surfing in Panama is a hidden secret at the moment, but it is getting out there, especially to surfers. There are some good surfing spots in and around Coronado and some great surfing in Santa Catalina (pictured), which is known as a surfer’s destination. They have surf camp hotels in Santa Catalina.

Bocas Del Toro has some nice surf breaks, and there are nice breaks on the eastern edge of the Azuero Peninsula, particularly in Pedasi. There is good surfing all over Panama.

I live on a surf break in the Coronado area called Rio Mar. The waves here in Rio Mar are not huge enough that they are going to kill you but you could get a barrel out of them. The surf breaks here in Rio Mar are surf breaks that people can actually surf on and not die.

There are places on every side of the country of Panama where there is surfing. The world surfing championships in 2011 were held in Santa Catalina (about 6 hours away from Panama City by car) on the surf break there. There is an area called Playa Morillo (5 hours away from Panama City by car) that people say has some of the best surfing in the country but there’s hardly anything there so you have to camp out if you want to go surfing there.
There is also plenty of surfing in Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side. There is also surfing by Portobello. There is surfing all over the country. They even surf under the bridge of the Pan American Highway in Panama City.
