Out of the 950 species of birds in Panama, the Audubon Society has found 550 of them in the Soberania National Park in a 24-hour period on their Christmas count. Every Christmas day, the Audubon Society does a 24-hour count where they send out people to count birds of different species, just in the Soberania National Park alone. They released the Harpy...The best place to go bird watching in Panama would probably be Soberania National Park (about 2 hours away from Panama City by car). So I guess Soberania National Park is the best place to go bird watching in Panama. Number two on my list of the best places for bird watching in Panama is Cerro Punta. Cerro Punta is out on the other side of the Volcan Baru, which is the biggest mountain in Panama. Cerro Punta is where people go to see Quetzal birds (photo above). Quetzals are beautiful birds that are most sought after by birders and non-birders alike.
You can also go to Cerro Ancon, right in the heart of Panama City, which is also a good place for bird watching. Cerro Ancon has a LOT of Toucans, and Metro Park is also actually IN the city! Cerro Ancon has the little palm trees that produce the fruit that toucans really like, so you will see a lot of toucans out there without having to leave the city at all. Cerro Ancon is not really for committed bird watchers or “twitchers,” because toucans are very common here in Panama, but for the general public, toucans are probably the most sought after birds. Everyone wants to see a toucan. You will also see a variety of birds at the Metropolitan Park, which is on the outskirts of Panama City towards Fort Clayton.

Traditionally, Panamá has always been a well-known and internationally recognized bridge for the migration of birds, mainly because of Panamá's exceptional geographic location, situated as it is between North and South America.
Panamá is part of the biological migratory passage for lots of birds (over 970 species), with an extraordinary variety of colors and types. This has caused worldwide attention for Panamá in that, even though it is a very small country, it has more bird species than the territory of both the United States and Canada combined.
Scientifically this is because Panamá has unique diversification, including primary and secondary rainforest, beaches, mountains, many rivers and all the necessary elements for a fantastic nature life, including but not limited to birds, but also to many animals like humpbacked whales, some dolphins, the famous gold frogs, the extraordinary Arphy Eagle (which is the Panamá national bird), Tucán, among so many others impossible to list in this space. Another picturesque reason is that Panamá produces many tropical fruits, including mangos, papayas trees, and others in almost in every house back yard that attracts birds of all sizes.
Around the national territory, and all year round, you can have the pleasure of beautiful bird singing, morning and afternoon, making very joyful sunrises and sunsets.
Bird watching places? Many of them. Almost the whole country. But mainly, visitors usually go to established tours for this purpose like in Gamboa, El Valle, Summit Gardens, Darién, Taboga, Chiriquí... impossible to mention them all.

Yes, there are exotic birds in and around Panama. According to the North American Birding Association (ABA), there are about 914 wild bird species in all of North America. Where would or can I go bird watching in and around Panama? I would definitely go to Altos del Maria as almost a third of all bird species in Panama can be found in this one community (and almost 1/3 of the bird population of the whole of North America).
While living in Altos del Maria, I made friends with several birders and went on a couple of outings. On one occasion, I went with a larger tour group who came over just to go birding. We saw the white eagle in this picture and many others species in a matter of one hour.
El Valle de Anton is also another place I would recommend.

There are about 976 species of birds in Panama, which is about two-thirds of all the species of birds in North America and more than the combined total species in both the US and Canada. Panama plays a very important role in bird migration because Panama is a natural bridge between North America and South America.
In the highlands in the province of Chiriqui, you can see Quetzales and in the jungles of Darien you can see the Harpy Eagle, Panama's national bird (pictured above). Panama's recognized birding sites include the Cordillera de Cerro Azul, rainforest regions of the Baru Volcano and Cerro La Vieja and the famous Pipeline Road in the Metropolitan Park.
The Barro Colorado Natural Monument is a wildlife refuge used as a natural laboratory by the Smithsonian Institute.
Sovereignty National Park (just 25 minutes from Panama City) protects the Panama Canal watershed. Within the limits of Sovereignty Park is the only aviary in the world for the Harpy Eagle. Pipeline Road is honored to hold the world record for number of birds in the Audubon Society Christmas for 19 consecutive years.
