Are there rainforests and cloud forests in Panama?

Panama has two types of forests: rain forests and the cloud rain forest, which is to be found in the Province of Chiriqui on the slopes of el Baru, an extinct volcano. Much of this forest has been cut due to lumbering, coffee plantations and other agricultural farms.

The tropical rain forest can be found on the banks of the Panama Canal as well as the Soberania National Park.  Also vestiges of the cloud rain forest are found in the El Valle area of Panama.

The rainforest in Panama is one of the most accessible in the world and Panama City is the only Latin American capital surrounded by rainforest.  One great option is the Gamboa Rainforest Resort located just a 40 minute drive from Panama City.  Here you can hop on an arial ram and glide through the rainforest or take a boat tour on the Panama Canal while observing the vast variety of wildlife and tropical rainforest.

There are a number of indigenous groups that inhabit that area, the forest is quite thick, and there are lots of canals through there. It’s not a friendly place to visit in general. It is interesting because of the Legend of the Darien, about an area that is untamed in North America where there are no roads. After seeing the area you would understand why. The Inter-Americana Highway does not go through there because it’s simply not the type of land that is meant to be developed. It’s very marshy and endless so it could also be a real puzzle to try to put together continuous roads through the Darien.
