What are the best things to buy in Panama as opposed to other places?

I believe some of the best things to buy in Panama are the beautiful handicrafts made by the different Indigenous tribes (Indians) that we have in Panama.
Some well known and very beautiful things I can mention that you can buy are:
1.) the Molas (hand made layered tapestry) made by the Guna Indians (these Indians are from the San Blas /Caribbean Side)

2.) The Embera Indians make the most beautiful hand made baskets..these are made by the "women". All the colors used for making these baskets come from plants, vegetables, seeds. The Embera "men" make the most amazing carvings out of seeds called "tagua". They also carve from a wood called "CocoBolo". These Indians are originally from the Darien area...but some have moved to the Chagres River...and we can take you to visit their villages.
3.) We also have some beautiful dresses/mumu style made by the Guaymi Indians.
from the Chiriqui/Bocas del Toro area.
This is just "some" of the best things you can buy in Panama! There is more!

If you are looking for something unique to Panama with local flavor your best option is provided by the native handicraft.
There are several shops in Casco Viejo were you can find the work of Kunas and Emberas.
The picture to the right is a sample.

However, I can tell you that Panamá has always been famous for trade and commerce. Being that Panamá is more service-oriented, it offers products imported from around the world.
Probably the best prices and products, depending on the region in which you live, could be found in casual clothing and jewelry, as well as housewares, electronics, fresh fruits and vegetables, and heavy construction equipment. Other good services and prices you can get in Panamá, vs. other places is the medical surgery, as well as spa treatments. As always, some prices will be absolutely amazingly low for some visitors, while at other times, a visitor might think they can get a better deal in their country of origin (especially when the item in question is on sale).
For generations, people from Latin America and the Caribbean have visited Panamá exclusively for wholesale shopping. One proof of that is our Colón Free Zone, which is recognized worldwide and that interchanges millions and millions of dollars every year.
As for other contributors to mention, Panamá is also very well known for its unique crafts and famous hats (not "Panamá hats," as those are from Ecuador), as well as the "guayaberas", similar to Cuban ones.

A lot of people from the States, Canada, Colombia, Venezuela, and other countries come to Panama on organized 'shopping junkets' to buy clothes, perfumes and other items. Even after including the costs for plane fare and hotels, the prices to buy in Panama work out cheaper. Especially if you want to resell these items in your home country later.

The best things to buy here in Panama City would be clothing. I haven’t seen any place that has all the good brands that you can find on 5th Avenue in New York. However, the Multi Plaza here in Panama City has all the good brands from all over the world; it has them in one place, in greater variety than any place other then New York City, and it has them in a mall!

In New York City, you find all the good brands on 5th Avenue and that is it. There is no other Louis Vuitton store in New York aside from the one in 5th Avenue. In New York, there are separate stores for each brand. Here in Panama City, however, you can just go to Multi Plaza, and you will find all the international designer brands there, and all in one place.

If you are interested in rum, I would recommend that you try Ron Abuelo, which is a Panamanian rum brand that dates back to 1936. You may be delighted by its quality in comparison with the price from the basic one to the premium one. Cheers!!

For me the best things to buy in Panama would be the fruits, because the fruits here are ripe from the vine or from the tree. I enjoy the fruits here. The bananas and the papayas are amazing.
Panamanians are big on making smoothies. If you come to Panama, you definitely should try their fruits.

The best thing to buy in Panama is pineapples! I have become a pineapple addict. I love Chinese bananas here in Panama, which are the shorter bananas. It is watermelon season right now, and I love watermelons, too. I am also addicted to passionfruit.
We have lots of stores here that are happy to dispose American merchandise super cheap so I got my Greg Norman golf pants at a store. You will see a whole rack of last year’s American style merchandise....

We have lots of stores here that are happy to dispose American merchandise super cheap so I got my Greg Norman golf pants at a store. You will see a whole rack of last year’s American style merchandise. I paid US $8 for my Greg Norman golf pants that would be $50 in the US. We’re a good dumping ground for US merchandise. My shorts may be one year out of style but they’re great. Buying that type of stuff is a good buy here in Panama.
Buying American brand Kellogg’s corn flakes, which is a real fluffy product, is expensive here. If you buy Costa Rican cereal, which is better and has no corn syrup in it, it is cheaper. If you start changing things and buy more local-- Costa Rican, or Chilean stuff, it is cheaper. The best deal that Americans and Canadians say is that Venezuelan, Chilean, Argentinian wines aren’t taxed so we get great wine for $5. That is one of the first things that make people say, “Oh my goodness, how exciting is that?”
