How are the apartments in Panama different than in the US or Canada?

Apartments in Panama are very similar in many ways to the U.S. or Canada. However on many occasions you will find some bad fixtures or plumbing and some annoying, usually minor problems. Apartments in Panama are very similar in many ways to the U.S. or Canada. However on many occasions you will find some bad fixtures or plumbing and some annoying, usually minor problems. Normally, if using gas you will be using Butano bottled gas which you will need to buy and change for a new one when needed. These are very cheap and last for ages. Always check an apartment thoroughly and have the lease checked also so that you are aware of the landlords conditions and your own rights. Normally the contract will be in Spanish and obviously subject to Panamanian law. An inventory should be made before moving in and attached to the contract. Outside of the city the rents will drop considerably unless you choose an area with a large ex pat population.

Another difference is that in Panama City each building has at least one day concierge and one security guard at night, so everyone feels very secure, and they both are trained to help you out with your grocery shops, or bags. Very easy going and helpful. In addition buildings here are inside neighborhoods and not in gated communities, as are many in the US, meaning that you can walk around to shops, restaurants and other entertainment centers freely, just around the corner from your Panamanian apartment.
Prices are also similar to US, depending on the area and amenities of the building. And of course, chose a respectable real estate agent.
In "the country", or "interior", the situation is different. Apartment buildings are becoming more popular in the beach areas, in high income resorts or communities. In cities other than Panama City, such as David, Chitré or Santiago, there are also less expensive apartments, on small buildings. More common in these areas, however, are single family houses.

But then if you live in some other area of Panama City at one of the high rises (pictured, above), say at Paitilla or Costa del Este, or even Clayton in the Ciudad del Saber, you find that the apartments are pretty spacious. Some tend to be an entire floor or half a floor with a lot of walking room and a balcony. The same amount of money will rent you different accommodations, depending on the neighborhood, including a lot of variation in square footage. High rises tend to have similar size of square footage to US apartments, generally speaking. Just keep in mind, Casco Viejo’s space is at a premium, so be prepared for a New York style living situation.
Outside Panama City, your money goes a lot farther. For the same amount that you’d pay for an apartment in Panama [City], you can probably get an enormous house outside of the city.

They have maid’s quarters and are typically very solid construction. They have larger apartments with larger living areas, living spaces, rooms, etc., whereas those buildings that were built lately are generally more Americanized, with a bit smaller rooms.
My opinion is that the construction here in Panama is quite comparable to the US standards. The new architecture here in Panama City is really nice. Some of the new buildings here in Panama, especially the commercial buildings, have some elaborate designs. Some people compare it to Dubai as far as modern buildings are concerned. Many of the newer apartment buildings have that modern theme as well.

I haven’t really lived in the US and Canada. From a European’s perspective, the apartments in Panama are big. They don’t have small shoebox apartments like they have in Europe. The average apartment here in Panama City is 80 to 100 square meters (about 860 to 1,075 square feet). It’s easy to find a three-bedroom, 200-square meter (about 2,150 square foot) apartment in this city, or a two or three-bedroom apartment. It’s easy to find a three-bedroom, 200-square meter (about 2,150 square foot) apartment in this city, or a two or three-bedroom apartment. There are plenty of those because there are so few houses, I suppose. A big apartment in Europe is 70 square meters (about 750 square feet). They’re more compact. But here, anything from 100 to 200 square meters would be average.
The floor plans are not any different in Panama City that I would suppose in the US or Canada, except that, in Panama City, most of the apartments have balconies.
It seems to me, and this is more recently, the last five or seven years, there doesn’t seem to be the same quality control in Panama City that they would have in European apartments. If you get something built here, it won’t look very good in a few years, in my opinion. I think they cut some corners, maybe on the materials they use. The workmanship is just not as good.
