Finding a good vet in Panama is easy as good vets are plentiful all around the country. What is even better as that as a foreigner, people are eager to lend a helping hand and offer you advice when you are in need of finding a good service for your favorite canine or kitty. All major cities offer well trained, professional veterinarian offices as well as any areas where expat communities are present-- Panama City, Coronado, El Valle, Pedasi, David, Boquete and even Bocas del Toro. Vet care and pet care is much more economical than what you would find in North America and even better-- most vets speak or have a good understanding of English! Some vets are more skilled in surgery while others specialize more in basic medicine. Great vets can be found in all areas of the country and most populated areas now offer Spay and Neuter Clinics where you and your neighbors can bring your dog or cat for surgery for a minimal fee or a small donation. The vets that volunteer their time at these clinics are some of the best in the country and as a pet lover yourself, you can get involved and help at the monthly Clinics. Owning a pet in Panama is a pleasure as there are plenty of stray dogs and cats in need of your love and attention.

In Panamá City, many of the veterinarians are situated in San Francisco, most with web pages and English-speaking. Panamá also offers pet training, and a new law is set to go to the Congress regarding animal protection.

There is also good veterinary care in the interior of the country away from Panama City, with these vets having much more experience and providing much more services for farm animals like cows, pigs, horses; bigger animals like that. However, these vets still know how to treat your dog or cat. In addition, there are veterinary clinics that are specialize in non-farm animals in all the areas in Panama where expats would be likely to live.

Outside of the capital city, I have found it very difficult to find a veterinarian in Panama who is sufficiently skilled and equipped to take on difficult cases. For major surgery and difficult diagnoses, most expats in Boquete use a Costa Rican vet, whom they meet at the border for transfer of the pet. For routine matters, there are a number of vets in both Boquete and David.

Veterinarians in Panama are good by Panamanian standards. The US has some of the finest veterinarians in the world along with probably Canada or England and other parts of Europe. We know one or two good veterinarians here in Panama and there are others who are probably more suited to do something else in life.
In that respect, here in Panama, you can buy the things you need to treat, inject, and shoe the feet (such as horseshoes) of your own animals....

We know one or two good veterinarians here in Panama and there are others who are probably more suited to do something else in life.
In that respect, here in Panama, you can buy the things you need to treat, inject, and shoe the feet (such as horseshoes) of your own animals. Here, people still have the right to put down an animal when the time comes necessary. You cannot do that in England. I think you can still do that in some parts of the US. In Panama, I have the means to sedate the horse in some areas and to sew them up again and arrange for medications to treat them not because I could not get a good veterinarian but because it might take him a day to get here because he is a good vet and he is very busy.
The veterinarian that we have tends to work on a first come, first served basis, which I respect because he comes to us. He is very well schooled and was trained internationally in the most modern medicine and techniques but he still gives us more traditional remedies such as to mix up red onion with un-pasteurized honey for certain ailments, and it works. That is a lot cheaper than the potions sold by pharmaceutical companies that in many cases, we found do not work in the same way.
The veterinarian that we have came the other night at around 8 or 9 in the evening and we worked until 11:30 PM anto put over forty stitches into one of our horse’s legs. Employees of mine came out, helped roll over the horse and do other things. They helped hold the horse down because you can only sedate them for so long.
So I would say, we have good veterinary care but not universal good veterinary care. Here in Panama, you might pay the veterinarian around US $50 or $60 per visit. I think I paid around $105 for the evening I was just describing when one of our horses had its stitches, includingd the cost for the medications and supplies used.
In Boquete and David, there is what they call, in some places, “small animal vets”. There are about two or three of them here in Boquete and I am sure there are a lot of them in Panama City. A certain number of Panamanians, like many other people, have dogs, cats, and other small pets that they treat a lot of like their children and they want their pets looked after. We personally have much larger animals, so finding veterinarians for horses and cattle tends to be a bit more difficult.
If you would bring your dog or cat to Boquete, it will not be a problem for you to find good veterinary care.

We have a veterinarian in downtown Boquete who is bilingual, and one in Dolega (20 minutes from Boquete, between David and Boquete) who has a clinic called “Vet on Wheels.” He has a little van, and can go to your house and pick up your dog or your cat and take it to his vet’s office, give them a bath, cut their nails, and kind of groom them a little bit. I have a small dog, a Yorkie, and when I just came back early this year, I started living with my mom for a while, and since my mom has a huge female dog, my dog, who is a male, was bitten by mom’s dog and got a cut in his leg. We had to run with him to the vet and everything was fine.
Panama City has very luxurious veterinarians. There was one that’s very close to the banking area that has a mini-pool. It’s crazy, and it’s very interesting. Nobody should have any problems with their dogs here. They take good medical care of pets in Panama.

As an example, you may go to a veterinary clinic where on top of having a vet check your pet’s health, they’ll also sell dog food, or offer to do grooming or pet boarding services. Speaking from experience, vets in Panama are not that good. For me, pets are part of the family, and leaving my pets with somebody is comparable to leaving my kids with somebody. I’ve found that whenever I leave my dog with the vet here in Panama, they don’t take care of him the way I would. I expect people to treat pets as part of the family and not like something that’s disposable.
I have had unpleasant experiences with vets here in Panama- not only here in Chiriquí but also in Panama City. Today with the social media where people feel comfortable in sharing unpleasant experiences, you can read about things like this.
On the other hand, I have found good vets in Boquete. One of them also offers other kinds of services such as grooming or pet boarding services, and the other one is someone you can call in for a check-up.
