US training should not be the sole criteria for selecting a doctor. Select an English speaking doctor with whom you can communicate. Look for credentials from the above listed countries. When selecting a specialist, consider the suggestion of your internist (PCP) but do not always accept it at face value. Doctors typically receive a 10% referral commission form their friends.
In Panama it is like it is in any country, including the US. They all mean well. However, there are good doctors and then there are ....better doctors.

All the doctors that we know in Panama were trained in Johns Hopkins, Tulane University, and Georgetown and they come back here to Panama to practice.
All of our doctors (or at least 90% of them), whether they be a dermatologist, an internist or a cardiologist, were trained in the US. You can ask them or you will see their diplomas. Also, they are all bilingual.

To give you an idea of the quality and reputation of the healthcare services here in Panama City, a large union in the United States was recently in negotiations to bring their workers to Panama for healthcare services. The reason is that the prices for healthcare services here in Panama can run 1/3 of the price in the US. As a result, for example, a patient could have a hip transplant with his wife in the hotel next to him in Panama and the bill will still be 1/3 of the price in the United States. The same would be true of a heart transplant.
Having medical procedures done in Panama as opposed to in the US is a very great option because it is less expensive in Panama, with very good doctors, some of whom were trained in the US, and others who were trained in England and various other countries known for quality healthcare.
