Finally, I wear fake jewelry to the beach, because you would normally leave your bag in a chair or on the sand. So the answer is yes you can wear jewelry in Panama, just be smart about how and where you wear your jewelry.

I can wear jewelry in Panama, but I feel it is not necessarily a wise idea. My wife and I have lived in Panama for seven years and we generally feel Panama is a very safe place. All countries and cities have areas where open display of expensive jewelry can act as like "fishing for thieves". Thieves look for targets. I recommend you don't make yourself look like a good target. I have good jewelry, but I never wear it out on the town.

In Panama the rich don't flaunt their money, jewelry or other stuff. They blend in with the crowd and do not stand out.. A non-Latin will always stand out in Panama. I suggest you leave your "good stuff" at home.

You can absolutely wear jewelry in Panama and feel safe but of course, you would not do that if you were going to slum areas, just like in anywhere in the world. However, I have also tried walking along these not-so-great areas of Panama with my wedding ring on, and I noticed several uniformed guards or police officers everywhere.

We really have not had any problems wearing jewelry anywhere because there is security everywhere you go. I even wear an extra ring or an expensive necklace on some events and I have not experienced any problem at all. The security people are really approachable. you can walk up to them and greet them. They are very friendly.

Here in Panama, you don’t have that sense of insecurity. I usually wear jewelry while walking in the streets of Panama City. I couldn’t do that in Colombia. I hide all my jewelry when I’m there. In New York, there are some areas that are unsafe like the Bronx, and some areas of Brooklyn, but in the rest of New York City, it is safe to wear jewelry. In Panama City, I don't feel threatened or scared that somebody might steal my stuff. It is definitely safe here.
In New York City, you will find people on the streets who are on drugs or homeless people that are intimidating, and you will know them when you see them. People exchange information, too, so you learn that you are not supposed to go into those areas where they are. Here in Panama City, you won’t see anything like that. The people here are so pure in heart. I’m not saying that nothing bad happens here, but bad things like crime are not that rampant, because that is just not how Panamanians are.

I went to Taiwan where everything is so much safer in the sense that you could even leave your phone at a 7/11 at 2AM, go back the next day at 7AM and it will still be there. You could walk your dog at 3AM and talk on your phone at the same time and nothing would happen. I got a little bit too relaxed when it came to safety, and then I moved to the Dominican Republic for three years, and the first thing my mother-in-law told me was to take off my wedding ring. She said I could not walk with my wedding ring, earrings, or use my phone. Then I said, “Oh, now I understand how foreigners feel when they’re told to ‘do this’ and not do that when they go to Panama.” I understand that felt so bad.
Panama is very safe. Obviously, there are some “Red Zones” where you cannot feel safe in wearing jewelry and using your phone while walking on the streets, and you will definitely know which areas they are the moment you arrive.
If you’re not in those areas in the Red Zones, you should have no problem wearing big earrings like I do. I love big earrings. I don’t take off my wedding ring, and I’m always talking on the phone because I’m always doing business, because there is no problem here in Panama with any of this.
