How much does it cost to get TV in Panama?

How much does it cost to get TV in Panama depends on a number of factors. You can watch local channels for free, but it's analog, while TV in Panama is digital. To obtain digital programming, your building must be equipped with fiber optics. You should look up the websites of the two main providers: CableOnda and Cable&Wireless (the provider I have selected, after switching from the former). They have English-speaking reps. To obtain digital programming, your building must be equipped with fiber optics. You should look up the websites of the two main providers: CableOnda and Cable&Wireless (the provider I have selected, after switching from the former). They have English-speaking reps. The first question they'll ask you is the location of your apartment. Once they have verified it meets their technical requirements, they'll offer you a few plans. For comparison's sake, make sure that the rates offered are for the same length of time (one month or half-month). Keep in mind that those same companies offer packages (TV + Internet + phone, and in the case of C&W cell phone too). Those companies are big competitors and their offers are likely to vary. As of mid April 2013, here's a sampling:
The local channels are included. Additionally, CableOnda offers a Superfamiliar Plan with 184 channels (including HBO - but be aware it's not the same HBO you would watch in the US... ) at US$ 33.00 (monthly), or the Silver Pack with 208 channels at $38.50.
Cable&Wireless offers a Plan Creativo with 184 channels (no HBO) at $ 29.95 and a Plan Completo with 253 channels including HBO, MAX Prime and Movie City.
Naturally, with both providers, you can add-on the channels of your preference, but it can be costly, so it's probably better to select a wide range of channels even if you're unlikely to watch them, as long as they include your favorites.
Now, if your building is not equipped with fiber optics, you can contact Claro (my cell phone provider) and they can install a small satellite dish. Price for the installation varies between $20 and $40, depending on promotions. They offer a basic plan with 43 channels at $20.25 monthly or an advanced plan with 59 channels at $33.74. Adding HBO would cost an additional $9.00.

To get TV in Panama is in general very affordable. There are local channels that you have for free but you may also get cable TV with both English and Spanish channels starting from $30 / month depending of the package you choose. You can also combine this with an Internet package and pay about $60 per month.

You can get excellent prices, maybe not compared to "Black Friday", but for example 42" TV plasmas could cost around $500 and up (including the warranty), depending on the store and features, with special promotions several times a year.
The main stores in Panamá are: Panafoto, LG, Sonny, Rodelag, Discovery, Raemco, Fotokina, Multimax and others. Most of them have a presence in several minor cities.
As for cable TV, there are several companies that have several options and packages, like Claro, Cable Onda, Cable & Wireless, and plans could vary between $20 to $80 per month. Some of these companies offer a combined package that bundles Internet with a residential or cellular phone account. The more you take, the better price you get.
Warning: carefully check what you are getting, because sometimes it can be confusing. Be patient, because sometimes it can take a long time to chose the right plan for you. The good news is that companies offering the plans are in the malls.

The lowest cable plan for TV service in Panama costs US $15 per month and that gives you 30 channels – both local and American channels such as CNN, Fox, ESPN, and other popular broadcasting networks. You can go for a higher plan and get Cinemax, HBO 1 and 2. There are plenty of options when you apply for cable service in Panama.

My cable provider is Cable Onda and what I have with them is their TV, landline phone and DSL bundle package. I pay $100 per month for all three services.

Cable Onda, which is the major cable and phone provider here in Panama, offers Internet, cable, and telephone service bundles for around US $48 per month for the entry level package. The Pensionados (retirees) do not get a discount on these services because it is considered a luxury, so Pensionados pay the same amount as everybody else.

Television service in Panama is very inexpensive and it is usually bundled with Internet and a landline telephone. The basic US $50 monthly plan has 150-200 channels for the TV service and this includes American channels like HBO, E Entertainment, Discovery, and also shows for the kids. The Internet speed for this plan is around 5 Mbps to 10 Mbps.
