There is very good express bus service using busses that are really comfortable and big from San Juan del Sur to the capital in Managua. These busses run on various schedules.
Within both Managua and San Juan del Sur there are taxis that can take you anywhere.

There are beach buses in San Juan del Sur that can take you to neighboring beaches if you don’t have a rented vehicle. If you have to go to Managua, there are buses that can take you there for an affordable amount. Chicken buses are usually crowded; there’s not a lot of space. A lot of these chicken buses are old Blue Jay schools buses that were used in the US and they have been sort of recycled so they can be used as public transportation in countries like Nicaragua.

There are no buses that go around San Juan Del Sur because there is no need for them. Everything in San Juan Del Sur is pretty close by, so you can just walk or take a bike in order to get around.
If you want to go to other cities from San Juan Del Sur, there are inter-city buses and there is a bus station just for those buses.

If you want to go from Managua to San Juan Del Sur, you can take a minivan called Expressos. That minivan will take you from Managua to Rivas. Then, from Rivas, you can take a bus going to San Juan Del Sur.
Public transportation here in San Juan Del Sur is not the best. The buses that we have here are the yellow school buses that you see in the States, and they are extremely inexpensive to ride. That two and a half hour trip from San Juan del Sur to Managua only costs about US $10.
