How are the roads in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua? Do I need a four wheel drive in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua?
Steve Appel - Mountain Dream Villas San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua
The roads in San Juan Del Sur are paved. So if you plan on just hanging out in town, you do not need four wheel drive. However, if you plan on going south of town (Playa Hermosa, Playa Yankee, Playa Coca) it would be a good idea to have a four wheel drive. You have to have four wheel drive to get to Playa Yankee. Heading to the north (Playa Maderas), it is also recommended to have four wheel drive. You can make it out there on 2 wheel drive though. It is partially paved to the north. The south road is paved farther out. There are also taxis that can take you out to these places as well.
So to sum this up, it is best to have four wheel drive in the area of San Juan Del Sur so you can go and check out all of the great beaches San Juan has to offer. The beach at Playa Coca is amazing, a great place to grab a cold drink and relax.

You do not need a four-wheel drive in the city of San Juan Del Sur, but if you are going to the beach areas, it is recommended to have a four-wheel drive because most of the roads to the beaches are dirt roads.
Also, when it rains, you definitely need a tough vehicle to drive around in because the rain causes muddy puddles and some flooding. The flooding is not so bad that small cars can't drive on the roads here, but it is something that you would...

There are so few vehicles in San Juan Del Sur that once you get out of the village itself and even on to the main highways, there is such little traffic. The roads in Nicaragua are all paved. The roads in Nicaragua are great now and they are even better than the roads in Costa Rica. The Pan-American Highway is fully paved and so are the roads going south.

I feel really safe driving here. But you have to keep your wits about you because when you are driving, you share the road with pedestrians, and pedestrians here in Nicaragua walk in the middle of the road. You have to be careful; more so about the pedestrians than you do about other cars.

The last 5 to 6 years the roads improved a lot in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The new government has dropped a lot of money into the fixing of the roads and there are a lot more free lines. So the driving now is a lot better than it was.
A lot of the roads have been re-paved roads and a lot of dirt roads are being maintained much more than they used to be. Nicaragua is still a Third World Country in the sense that, when you’re driving at night there...

A lot of the roads have been re-paved roads and a lot of dirt roads are being maintained much more than they used to be. Nicaragua is still a Third World Country in the sense that, when you’re driving at night there might be a black horse in the middle of the road, so you have to always be on your toes. But it’s gotten a lot better. I don’t think the quality of the roads is a huge problem for anyone coming down who would want to rent a car and drive.
