San Juan del Sur is a lovely town and bay, that used to be a fishermen's town some years ago. During the Gold Rush in the United States, San Juan del Sur flourished because Americans coming from the eastern coast of USA looking for gold in California used this little town in Nicaragua to board steam boats to take them to California and this way avoided the Indian reserves.

Tourism has now changed the face of San Juan del Sur. Despite being one of the most visited destinations in Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur still keeps its flavor of originality. The town is surrounded by different unspoilt beaches to the north and to the south that every day wait for visitors to enjoy their warm waters and virgin coastal areas. They are excellent for surfing (some of the best in the world), awesome fishing, some times of the year even for viewing whales and massive turtle nesting, or just for riding a boat, swimming or sun bathing.
Some of the best known beaches in San Juan del Sur are: Madera, Marsella, Majahualt and Ocotal to the north and Playa Hermosa, Remanso, el Yankee, El Coco, Escameca and Ostional to the south.

Eugenio Cortez - Hacienda & Ecolodge Morgan´s Rock
There are several best beaches in San Juan Del Sur, which are all really nice, including:
- San Juan, the big beach (pictured), which we call "the headquarters" because lots of amenities are available compared to the other beaches.
- We also have Playa Marcella, which is very beautiful. It is good for swimming and there are a lot of tide pools. You will also see a lot of marine life in Marcella, which is really cool.

- There is also Playa Maderas, which is great for surfing. The waves in Maderas are big and good for surfing; international surfing events have been held there.
- We also have Playa Majahual, which is very pristine and great for surfing and for swimming.
- Playa La Flor is a protected beach area where the sea turtles arrive. The sea turtles are the biggest attraction on this beach.
- Another is Playa El Coco, which is very pretty, too. It is known for its long beach and there are many houses there.
- There is also Playa Hermosa, which is very good for surfing. Playa Hermosa has some little tide pools, which are great for kids. It is also a popular place for beach houses or properties.
San Juan, Playa Marcella, Playa Maderas, and Playa Majahual are located north of San Juan Del Sur while Playa La Flor, Playa El Coco, and Playa Hermosa are in the south. These are white sand beaches. You can expect to see lots of marine life in these beaches, too. You can probably see dolphins from the beach. Some of the beaches have bigger waves than the others, so some are better for surfing and some are better for swimming.
