How's the hiking and camping in and around San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua?
Eugenio Cortez - Hacienda & Ecolodge Morgan´s Rock
San Juan del Sur isn’t the best option for hiking and camping. It is definitely not a good idea to camp, as there aren’t any specific places on can camp.
You could hike towards the small mountains that overlook San Juan del Sur, but nothing too challenging or worthy.

I have seen people go camping in San Juan Del Sur, but there isn’t as much camping to do as there is hiking to do here.
There is a lot of hiking here in San Juan Del Sur. There is lots of places to room and board for US $6 to $10 per night. Most people don’t camp, but they stay at these places (which are all over the country of Nicaragua) where there is room and board and then hike from there.

There is lots of places in San Juan Del Sur where you can organize day hiking trips because you are in the village itself. The thing that people mostly do within San Juan Del Sur is go off to the beaches on bus shuttles. You just do not go hike in San Juan Del Sur. If you want to go hiking, you will go out of town on a day trip or you will go to Granada, which is around 45 minutes away from San Juan Del Sur. Then the Mombacho mountain is around 40 minutes away from Granada.

Mombacho is an extinct volcano with lots of trails and wildlife. They also have ziplining. You can see jaguars and there are guided tours. You can choose from 2- hour hikes to 4-hour hikes, depending on what is planned.

The hiking and camping in San Juan Del Sur is spectacular. We have really good hiking and really good off the beaten path trails where you can go and see all different types of nature and all different types of scenery.

The camping in and around the beaches of San Juan Del Sur is epic. It is very beautiful and camping can be does in these areas. People here in Nicaragua do camp. One of the beaches where people camp is in La Flor, which is a turtle reserves. You can camp there and spend the night. If you are lucky enough you will see a turtle come lay its eggs or you will see baby turtles hatching.
There is no light pollution whatsoever so when you get starry nights, get ready for the spectacle of its own. Camping in La Flor costs around US $15 a night or even less. La Flor is located just south of San Juan Del Sur, about a 30-minute drive away.
