How are the stores and shops in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua? How's the shopping in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua?

San Juan del Sur doesn’t have malls like you would find in Managua. If you want to go to a larger mall, you’ll have to go to Managua, which is two hours away. We have an artisan market and places where you can buy clothing, mainly the kind you would wear around the beach or casually.
More recently, there are many mom and pop types stores that sell jeans, shoes, beach clothing, etc. We have several small supermarkets and now a larger supermarket.

You can shop for everything you need in San Juan del Sur now. When I first moved here, we would have to have items shipped to us. Now I can buy everything I want in San Juan del Sur. You can even get your laptop worked on in San Juan del Sur. You can buy clothing, you can buy food, you can get everything, including restaurants.
We have all different types of restaurants. There’s new ones opening every day that I don’t even know about...

We have all different types of restaurants. There’s new ones opening every day that I don’t even know about until I see them driving down the street. San Juan del Sur is a diverse town, with multiple cultures. There’s lots of Italians here so we’ve got some really good Italian food.

Stores and shops in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, do not offer any top of the line clothing stores. Since we are a beach town, most of the clothing is beach wear and t-shirts.
Putting all of this aside, you can find several shopping malls in Managua (only a 2 hour drive away), just like you would find in the USA. We also have "Big Box Stores" in Managua that are modeled after the US big boxes. Membership is required but easy to...

We also have a large hardware store where you will find everything you might need to build, repair or remodel your property which is very similar to a Lowes.
Once a month, the ladies in San Juan del Sur have a shopping spree to Managua for major grocery shopping, hardware and, of course, those discounted beverages. Ask around and you will find the organizers. The trip is limited to 5 or 6 ladies due to the size of the van they use. Their motto is "What goes on in the van, stays in the van." By the way, no men are allowed.
We also have a Farmer's Market in San Juan del Sur each Saturday where you buy fresh produce, occasional "slightly worn" cloths and home baked goods. In Rivas, a short ride from San Juan del Sur, you can find better values in clothes and shoes.
Besides all this, vegetables and great fruit is available in their shopping area. Rivas is a short 30-45 minute ride from San Juan del Sur. The ladies also have a shopping spree to Rivas once a week.
You can find about anything you need between shopping in San Juan del Sur, Rivas and Managua.
Grocery shopping in San Juan del Sur will get you about everything you would desire to cook. We have a large grocery store. Several "convenience stores" exist where they are stocked with supplies that every "expat" would like. All of this in San Juan del Sur is in walking distance.

San Juan del Sur is a very small town that used to be a primarily a fishing village until very recently. Now, it is a tourist town, with lots of shops for surfers and that carry sun bathing clothes and related items. We also have souvenir shops and a supermarket.
If you live in San Juan del Sur, you can find the basic things you need to buy, but if you want more variety and a larger selection, you will have to go to more cosmopolitan places.

Stores and shops in San Juan del Sur are primarily made up of local families selling the usual shirts, skirts, homemade jewelry and basic home needs. You won’t find world known stores or anything with a big name. Prices are very low on the different items and are all pretty much 100% Nicaraguan made.

There are no malls in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. San Juan del Sur, is a tourist destination, so the shops that you will find here are souvenir shops where you can buy souvenir tee shirts, caps, crafts, and beach clothing. You will find long pants here in San Juan Del Sur, but there is not enough selection, so it is better to go to Managua for that. If you need to shop for more formal clothes or if you want a large selection from which to choose, you have to go to Granada or Managua...

The stores and shops in San Juan del Sur are really growing. Some higher end stores in the last year or two have opened up catering to mostly younger people. In San Juan del Sur now you can get anything from beachwear to elegant evening wear, which is a nice thing to see. It used to be just your flip-flops and beach items; board shorts and bikinis. But now there’s a number of higher end stores, still a very good value, but higher end more elegant clothing and that’s...

When you really want to do serious shopping, everything that you would want to do in your home city or hometown, you can do in Managua, at the capital, which is 2 hours away. There are several malls and two predominant large malls. The Galleria Santo Domingo is like stepping into Toronto; marble and granite, slick, and very clean, with all the high-end brands. We even have a Tiffany that just opened. All the big name brands such as Zara that people are shopping for clothes are available. We have a Sperry store. I don’t think I’ve even seen a Sperry store in Toronto but Sperry is now open.
We have Costco and Wal-Mart for those who like that. There are Galaxy theaters there. So you can really go to Managua and have a full day shopping, buy items such as cleaning supplies in bulk, go to the movies in the evening or to dine in a very nice restaurant, stay overnight in a beautiful boutique hotel for $80 with breakfast and then come home the next morning. That’s often what we do now.
