How are the restaurants in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua?

There are a number of fantastic restaurant options in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The beach road contains numerous seafood restaurants (Josseline's, El Timon, etc) where you can often find the catch of the day, whole fish, and more. If seafood isn't your thing, there are some great finer dining options that include the Spanish restaurant, Meson Español, El Colibri for Mediterranean, and Bambu for a nice fusion style meal.

If you are looking for a healthy option, try Jugoso for delicious salads and juices or the new
Buddha's Garden (located inside Zen Yoga) for raw and vegan choices.
On a budget or looking for something more authentic? Don't miss out on the "chicken lady" or "fritanga" - street vendors grilling up chicken and beef and serving it with fresh avocado, gallo pinto, plantains, and slaw. There are also numerous taco spots and burger joints (Nacho Libre) popping up. Be sure to stop by Gato Negro for a great cup of coffee and a delicious breakfast and don't forget to grab some fresh baked bread or cinnamon rolls from Pan de Vida Bakery.

In San Juan Del Sur, you would find street food just like you would find food trucks in the US. There are a couple of Taco Trucks here where you can buy tacos for about US $1. They also sell burritos and quesadillas. Pizza is around $12 to $15. You can also go to the asado restaurant, which is a local beef barbeque restaurant that serves local rice, beans, and plantains for about $5 to $6.

There are also some upscale restaurants in hotels like the Pelican Eyes where they have gourmet food. They serve local ingredients like fish, fruits and vegetables and they cost about $12-$15 per plated meal.
There are a couple of specialty, high end restaurants in San Juan del Sur like El Meson Español. They serve really delicious seafood but with a Spanish flair. It would cost you about $18 for a big plated meal.

We have good restaurants in San Juan Del Sur. They have a nice ambience, they serve good food, and the rates are affordable. The restaurants in San Juan Del Sur serve a lot of Nicaraguan food, but I also know a couple of Italian restaurants here.
There are typical restaurants that offer seafood, too. You can also eat at the hotels, which have a wide variety of food on the menu. There is also an ice cream parlor in San Juan Del Sur and there are...

There is also an ice cream parlor in San Juan Del Sur and there are several cafes, too. There are taco trucks and a fried chicken store. You will also find fritangas here in San Juan Del Sur, where a homeowner will set up a full kitchen set in front of his house on the sidewalk and sell local Nicaraguan food.

It would be nice to have some more restaurants in San Juan Del Sur, but I do not feel deprived because of the restaurants that are already here. San Juan Del Sur is a very small fishing village and the restaurants here are good. A lot of the people in San Juan Del Sur cook, too. If you feel like eating something particular, you can just cook.

If you really want to eat out or if you are looking for some exotic dish, you can hop in your car and go to either Managua or Granada. Granada, which is an hour away from San Juan Del Sur, has a wide variety of restaurants, so there is all kinds of food there. They have a lot more upscale dining in Granada, but it is still very affordable. If you are looking for some fine dining, Granada is very, very good. I would go there first. (Photo above is of a restaurant in Granada)
Managua is about two hours from San Juan del Sur by car. If you know where to go in Managua (and it might take you some time to know where to go) has some fantastic restaurants that are very comparable to the ones in Toronto, Canada, but for less cost. It costs about half the cost to dine in Managua as it would in the restaurants in Toronto.

Here in San Juan Del Sur, we are very lucky in that we have an assortment of restaurants to go to. We have lots of local restaurants that serve the typical local food. A typical plate would have a protein of fish, chicken, or beef. Most often it's served with rice, sometimes a cabbage salad, and another starch, whether it is French fries or tostones (fried green plantain).
One of the popular dishes and one that I really enjoy here is called jalapeno...

One of the popular dishes and one that I really enjoy here is called jalapeno chicken or "pollo con jalapeno". This jalapeno sauce is made with jalapenos, onions, a little bit of "crema" (cream), and a little bit of butter; and it's absolutely delicious. You can put that on everything; fish, chicken, and beef. It's really good.
Here in San Juan Del Sur, we have a sushi restaurant; three Italian restaurants, and one is an Italian pizza restaurant that makes really amazing thin crust, real Italian pizza cooked in a wood fire oven; Mexican; Thai curry; fried chicken fast food; Mediterranean; and, falafel. For the size of the town, there is a real great assortment of different restaurants.
