Some say it is safe to drink the water in San Juan del Sur. I don’t.
As an expat in a foreign country we tend always to have sensitivities to different water purities, and Nicaragua is a developing nation. I don't believe it's worth jeopardizing your health to save a few dollars not buying purified water.

Is it safe to drink water in San Juan del Sur? Yes and No. Yes because it is treated and No because your body might not be used to it. It is always a good idea to drink bottled water while traveling outside of the US or Europe. We have to remember that the local beer is only US $1 and as they say in Nicaragua, Beer is not only for Breakfast. Be careful and stay with bottled water.

It is safe to drink the water in San Juan Del Sur, but the distribution of water is another issue. Water is turned off quite often due to the poor infrastructure that they have here. There are only about two valves in the whole town. So if they need to work in one area, they have to close the valve that affects that area and all the other places where water is supplied through that valve will not have water either. Sometimes this affects the whole town. The problem is not mainly the supply of water, but on the distribution plants. As an example, when I had a meter installed at my house, half of the area was without water while my meter was being installed. I could not believe it!
They are now working on the distribution of water in San Juan del Sur. Going back to the question, when you have water, yes, it is safe to drink it. We drink it right out of the tap. We use it for brushing teeth and for cooking. They have water treatment plants here so the water is clean.

Water is inexpensive so maybe as a matter of personal choice, expats do buy bottled water but that does not necessarily mean that drinking water from the tap is unsafe. Most of the time, expats order bottled water in restaurants. Then, they order ice to put on their water. The ice is made from tap water and they are fine with that.
If it is your first time coming to San Juan Del Sur, you could drink bottled water but you could gradually adjust into drinking local tap water and nothing bad could happen to your health.

It is not safe to drink the water in San Juan del Sur. The locals in San Juan del Sur buy bottled water. I would not recommend for tourists to drink the water in San Juan del Sur. I have been living here for 10 years and I still drink bottled water.

It’s safe to drink the water in San Juan del Sur. The tap water in San Juan del Sur is excellent to wash your vegetables in because there’s so much chlorine in it that it will definitely clean everything out. It’s safe to drink in that there’s not going to be any bacteria left in it, but there’s a lot of chlorine. We use a clay pot filter in San Juan del Sur to clean the tap water and make it drinkable. Clay pot filters are very simple and look like a big garbage can. We fit a clay pot with colloidal silver, which is used to clean water from any source and can cost up to $40, onto the top of it and pour tap water into there. A few hours later, it slowly drips down and you get super clean water.
We do brush our teeth with tap water here in San Juan del Sur. The water is safe in San Juan del Sur - I have drunk the tap water lots of times. It’s just chlorinated, but it’s city water so it’s fine. When we wash vegetables, we use the water from the tap because the chlorine in it will help clean off anything that’s on the fruits and vegetables. Chlorine in the water in San Juan del Sur is almost an added bonus.
