Retirement in San Juan Del Sur would mean a very quiet and slow-paced life. There are a lot of open areas and you wouldn’t feel the hustle and bustle of a big city. Retirement here would be a very relaxing experience. Your biggest concern would probably be trying to stay out of the sun for too long and finding things that would keep you busy from day to day.
There are a lot of expats in San Juan Del Sur that form communities with other expats so within San Juan Del Sur, there is plenty of accommodations, restaurants and bars, and local venues that host open mic nights (stand-up comedy nights), or salsa nights. There are a lot of places to go to if you want to go dancing, too.
San Juan Del Sur is one of the few places where you will find a lot of things to do compared to other neighboring beach communities. This is one of those places where if you go out to town, more often than not, you will find something fun to do. And depending on your age bracket, there are some days of the week when the parties in San Juan Del Sur just goes on and on.
But if you are the type of retiree who enjoys your privacy, San Juan Del Sur can also be a great place for you because out here, you can get away from the crowd fairly easily.
A lot of retirees also like to go to neighboring beaches or visit the neighboring colonial cities like Granada or Ometepe Island which is about 1 hour and 20 minutes away from San Juan Del Sur. These are places where retirees can go to and explore to occupy their time. Also, the border of Costa Rica is not too far away from here so you can go there any time and explore.

A lot of people retire in San Juan Del Sur because they can buy a house just a little outside of the main streets and still be just 5 minutes away to get to the restaurants and bars where the fun is. At the same time, you can still be close to the beaches.
If I were to retire, I would retire in San Juan Del Sur or in a place similar to it. It’s calm, really safe and they have a lot of good food. You can meet expats or tourists from different countries who are really friendly. You can also go surfing in San Juan Del Sur. So for all these reasons, retirement in San Juan Del Sur is really great.

San Juan del Sur is like any other city in Nicaragua where life definitely starts very early in the morning, like 4: 30 or 5 AM. That’s when you see the markets beginning to open, the fishermen getting ready to head out to fish, the surfers heading out to surf. It is very, very laid back for retirement.When I say laid back, you can probably do the entire day’s chores in about two hours, maybe even less. You can walk on the beach, visit different stores, eat in one of the restaurants, maybe do some exercise. The town per se runs at about 6 miles per hour. I can only imagine being retired.
It’s definitely not New York City that goes 1,000 miles per hour. Retiring in San Juan del Sur is the complete opposite. It is extremely relaxing. You can sit by the porch during the afternoons, have lunch at 12 because you were up since 6, reading the newspaper at 7, having breakfast, going out. The vibe is very relaxed. It is an “I don’t care about the world” type of feeling. I wouldn’t mind relaxing in San Juan for the rest of my life.
I’ve seen a lot of older folks and the impression that I get is they obviously have money but not millionaire money. They have money to retire in San Juan del Sur so they can have the luxury to do pretty much whatever they want. Once they are bored, they’ll go have lunch at Morgan’s Rock or they’ll go on a day trip to Ometepe or they’ll go fishing for the day because they’re obviously retired and they can afford it but it’s not like they’re spending thousands and thousands of dollars. It’s really affordable.

There are options for all types of retirements here in San Juan Del Sur. A lot of retired people here are still active. Some of the retirees that I know here surf. They spend time on the beach or get involved in the schools. San Juan Del Sur is a great place to retire.

For me, San Juan del Sur is the best option for retirement because there’s a variety of things to do and an increasing variety by going outside of San Juan del Sur. I have a number of clients who moved from Granada. They had originally decided to settle in Granada and subsequently moved to San Juan del Sur because here you’re closer to golf courses and ocean activities—sailing, boating, fishing—and yet at the same time we’re close to everything, like volcanoes and lakes. There’s a lot more variety here in San Juan del Sur that keeps retirees interested rather than being stuck in the city or in a resort where you feel trapped in the resort. There are people for example in Rancho Santana or in other areas in Tola where they’re 2 or 3 hours from doing anything. They’re in the resort and there’s one shop and one or two restaurants and that’s it. In contrast, retirement in San Juan is lively and varied with lots of different activities to engage you in, whatever you fancy. There’s trivia nights, Saturday gringo market where you can buy food prepared by other gringos that you wouldn’t typically get in Nicaraguan stores, etc.
