Retirees in San Juan del Sur mostly come from Germany, America, and Canada. Most of the expats in San Juan Del Sur are young people. A lot of people come to Nicaragua not to retire but just because they like it here. Some expats choose to live in San Juan Del Sur just to enjoy the surf. I’ve seen people who are 24 to 30 years old, who move in and buy a house or rent in San Juan Del Sur because of the surf. Only about 5% - 10% of expats are senior citizens who retired in San Juan Del Sur.

There are about 1,000 to 1,200 expats living in San Juan Del Sur. Most of the expats here are from Canada, there is a few from the US, and some from Ireland, and England as well.

The number of expats living in San Juan Del Sur has to be in the tens of thousands now. They would be living in San Juan Del Sur and in the surrounding beach areas. Around here in Tola, more and more people are moving here every day, setting up new businesses, and starting up their families here.
