Are the doctors in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua good?

I have not needed to use a doctor in San Juan del Sur but I know that there is a good clinic in town and I have taken friends there who have been well treated.
I would say, however, that expats would be much better off to visit one of the two major First World hospitals in Managua and get registered with a cheap monthly plan for about $40 per month. After your first visit you will be treated like a king (or queen!) And your visits and any...

After your first visit you will be treated like a king (or queen!) And your visits and any medications are extremely affordable, just a few dollars in fact.
I am excited to learn that there is a new dental practice in San Juan del Sur and I hear great things about them! My friend on Guelph, from Ontario Canada is flying down for a weekend especially for a procedure, which is better quality and a fraction of the cost of the same procedure at home!!!

The doctors in San Juan Del Sur are not good for complicated or serious problems. They can treat you if you are stung by a stingray. They will stitch you up, if you have a cut that needs stitching. They can also give vaccinations and ease your pain. But it is not advisable to go to San Juan Del Sur to have surgery done or for dental services. The best place to go to for quality healthcare is Managua, and that applies to most of the country of Nicaragua, not just to San Juan...

If you have to have a baby in San Juan Del Sur, you could deliver a baby here; that’s not a problem. The hospitals here have doctors and a maternity bed, so they can attend to your wife and the baby. Everything they need to have a safe delivery is provided. For the general population, the quality of the doctors in San Juan Del Sur is not an issue. If your medical standards are non-existent or low, then you can have a baby in San Juan Del Sur and that would not be a problem. But if you know about medicine and you know what happens behind it, you as a normal thinking person, who knows what it takes to deliver a baby, will not have a baby in San Juan Del Sur. You would rather go to Managua. There is a hospital in Rivas, which is bigger and better than anything in San Juan del Sur, but if my wife would deliver a baby, I would rather take her to Managua.
To some degree it is a risk knowing that if something bad happens to you, you are two hours away from the best hospital. It is always at the back of your mind. We know what can be attended to medically in San Juan Del Sur and what cannot.
As an example, my cousin got food poisoning after eating oysters. He went to a clinic in San Juan Del Sur and they gave him an IV and some medication to settle down his stomach because he had a pretty bad case of diarrhea. They stabilized him for a couple of hours and once he was feeling a little better, he went to Managua.

There are a couple of doctors in San Juan del Sur and they are good. However, the expats go to the hospitals and have their check-ups with their doctors in Managua, which is two hours away from San Juan del Sur. We have one of the best hospitals in Central America in Managua, Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas.

If something really bad happened, for example, you had a heart attack in San Juan del Sur and could drive two hours to Managua, you are taken to the health center in town where there are doctors and nurses who would help you. You can definitely get help there.

However, if you wanted a specialist, you would have to go somewhere else. If something happens to you that is outside their specialty or you need special care, the doctors and nurses in San Juan del Sur can stabilize you, and they would somehow get you to the hospital in Managua on an ambulance.
If you have a particular medical condition, having a hospital that is two hours away may be a reason for you not to live in San Juan del Sur. In the past, there are people who did not buy property because there are no hospitals in San Juan del Sur. They were thinking of retiring in San Juan del Sur and needed a really good hospital very close by.
