A typical maid in San Juan Del Sur would make a salary of about US $200 per month. That would be a stay-in housekeeper. You usually pay for their room and board, and their everyday food. So that works out to about $250 to $260 per month out of pocket for you. They get about four days out of the month off, plus there are a lot of Nicaraguan holidays where they also do not work. If you sum up all the Nicaraguan holidays, it comes up to about a month of the year.

If you have a housekeeper working for you full time, they pay into their social security, which usually costs around $10 to $10 per month. You pay their holidays, if they worked their holidays. If they choose to work on a holiday, they will get 1 ½ times their pay for that day.
If you prefer the maid to work on an as needed basis, you will pay anywhere from US $8 to $10 per day to have a maid to come in and clean a 4-bedroom home. If you have a smaller home then you can arrange to pay maybe a bit less.

Getting a housekeeper or a maid in San Juan Del Sur is probably one of the lowest amounts in Central America. My maid was full time. II paid her US $50 a month a couple of years ago. It could have gone up a little bit now. As you probably know, Nicaraguans live on something less than $2 a day. There are people who are working for $30, $50, or $100 a month.
You can pretty much get any type of home service-- gardener, maids, drivers, caretakers, and all for less than $100...

You can pretty much get any type of home service-- gardener, maids, drivers, caretakers, and all for less than $100 each per month. In Costa Rica or Mexico or some of the other neighboring countries, even Panama, it could cost $20 a day for a housekeeper. It's a fraction of that in Nicaragua.
If we were going somewhere far away, I would pay for the housekeeper’s food.
In a lot of places in Nicaragua, it's so common to have a driver that places have accommodations for drivers. If you go somewhere and you stay at a hotel, they have a place for the drivers to sleep. It's not nice but it's just the reality of the situation there. They have separate accommodations for staff because so many people travel with a nanny, a driver, or maybe another person.

The minimum wage for a full time domestic employee in Nicaragua is about US $175 a month. Personally, our housekeepers here in San Juan del Sur have been with us for a very long time and I have given them raises each year so I pay almost double that amount.
The salary of housekeepers could also depend on where you got them and what your arrangements are. If they are live on your property and you feed them, then you could pay them around $125 a month....

If you have them at your house only once a week, the going rate right now is about $4 an hour. It is really a case-by-case basis.
