How bad are the mosquitoes and other bugs and insects in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua?

The insects in the town of San Juan del Sur are not bothersome. A government agency has been pretty successful in keeping the insects to a manageable level.
As a point of reference, about six months ago, I was in Miami at a friend’s house. When we went outside to eat a hamburger, the mosquitoes attacked me. That doesn’t happen in San Juan del Sur. I’ve been going to San Juan del Sur for 14 years and I’ve never felt that mosquitos...

However, if you go to the more rural areas, outside of the town, it’s a different story. In these areas, you’re going to have more mosquitoes and other bugs, but not in San Juan del Sur proper, where the insect population is pretty much under control.

The mosquitoes and other bugs and insects are pretty well controlled by a spraying program implemented by the municipality of San Juan del Sur. Yes, there are bugs since we really are part of a dry jungle. Most of the Vacation Rental places do a regular bug control program.

How bad the mosquitoes and other insects are in the area of San Juan del Sur depends on where you are located and the season. If the area is less developed, you will find more mosquitoes. If the winds are blowing, the problems with mosquitoes and other bugs are much less. During the rainy season, the problems with bugs and other insects and mosquitoes in San Juan del Sur is worse. In the jungle of Nicaragua, the problem is worse. However, in the more developed areas of San Juan del Sur, mosquitoes, bugs, and other insects do not affect people’s lifestyle and activities.

Mosquitoes and bugs in San Juan del Sur are just the same as they are everywhere during the rainy season. There may be more mosquitoes and bugs here in San Juan Del Sur than in Toronto, Canada where I come from, but they are bad in either place just the same. It is very humid during the rainy season, so there tends to be more mosquitoes during this time.

The mosquitoes and bugs in San Juan Del Sur are not that horrible, but they can be a problem if you do not put on any bug spray. There are mosquitoes and bugs all year round in San Juan Del Sur, but it is probably a little worse during the rainy season.
There are not a lot of mosquitoes and bugs during the first couple of months of the year because it is windy, but during the rainy season, they may be a problem, especially at sunset. If you put on some bug...

Mosquitoes aren't really an issue for me here in San Juan Del Sur. When it rains and things are a little more wet, we may have some mosquitoes at dusk, but we just make sure that our doors and windows that don't have screens on them are closed. We apply some insect repellant if we're going out. The main thing to do is to make sure that there's no standing water near your home or in your yard because that will certainly attract mosquitoes.

With regard to other bugs or insects in San Juan Del Sur, we do have a variety of bugs and insects at various times in the house or outside, including ants. Sometimes it's a battle to keep the ants away. You must be sure to keep all of your sugary food items like cereal, sugar, and sweet drinks in sealed containers or put these in the refrigerator. If you spill something on the counter like a sweet, sticky substance, you need to make sure to wipe it off really quickly or the ants will come in and clean it up for you.
Scorpions are something that we see on occasion in our house. They're not poisonous. My husband, Gordon, and I, have not been stung in the five years that we lived here. We have beetles and sow bugs during the rainy season as well.
I notice the bugs more here in San Juan Del Sur than in Canada because generally the homes that people live in, whether you're local or a foreigner in San Juan del Sur, don't seal up like our home in Canada and in San Juan del Sur we have our doors and windows open all the time to allow the air flow to come in and out of the house. There are fewer mosquitoes in San Juan Del Sur though than maybe what I'd be used to in Canada. If there's a breeze, we rarely have mosquitoes. That's another time when the mosquitoes would show up; when the air is dead still.
