Is there diving, SCUBA or snorkeling in and around Managua, Nicaragua?
Mike Quinn - Farmstay El Portón Verde
One can dive, SCUBA, snorkel or simply swim underwater in Laguna de Apoyo, nearby Managua. The Laguna, located about 1/2 hours drive from the capital, is only one of the areas near Managua in which these activities can be realized, but is probably the best area to dive. As a crater lake, it has the cleanest and clearest waters in Central America, and hosts unique species of Cichlid fish that aquarium keepers from all over the world would love to have in their tanks!

Similarly, the waters of Laguna Xiloa, another crater lake even closer to Managua, is another location for diving.
If your diving preference is for saltwater dives, other areas nearby Managua are the beaches of the Pacific ocean, which are located approximately one hour away. Diving in the Pacific can be challenging however, as large swells batter the coastline at times, especially during the months of April to October. The best diving would be in the dry season, from November through March.
So while your local diving options may be somewhat limited, Managua is the best place to launch your diving and snorkeling adventure as it is where the flights to the Caribbean coastline and islands originate. Corn Island is hands-down the best diving in Nicaragua and is best accessed via airplane from Managua. Below is a look at a typical Little Corn Island dive trip. Looks divine, doesn't it?
Thanks for reading and I hope this helped answer your question about if there is diving, SCUBA, or snorkeling around Managua, Nicaragua.
