How's the surf and surfing in and around Managua, Nicaragua?
Valeria Espinoza - Gran Pacifica
The surf and surfing in and around Managua is great and a lot of fun.
Surfers come to Gran Pacifica, which is located an hour away from the main city of Managua to ride two of the best surf spots in Nicaragua, the Meatgrinder and the Azuchillo Waves. I'm not a surfer, but WOW it's fun to watch. Some surfers have even bought homes at Gran Pacifica to just enjoy the waves every single day. The best part is that the beach is not crowded at all.

There are other beaches within Gran Pacifica that have small waves, and that are very family and children friendly. Gran Pacifica has a variety of beaches because we own 3.5 miles of beachfront property. We still don’t have a different name for each individual beach. We call the entire beach area San Diego Beach, and then differentiate the separate beaches by just calling them "the swimming beach" or "the surfing beach". There are lovely beach areas at Gran Pacifica where you just enjoy swimming.
For other places outside our property, if you are planning to spend a day on the beach nearby Managua with your kids and non-surfer friends, you can visit Pochomil, which is a very popular destination for locals because of the many restaurants, bars, and small hotels there. It’s about 68 kilometers (42 miles) from the Managua city area. The other closest beach is Masachapa, located about 65 kilometers (39 miles) away and mostly known as a fishing village. They have some restaurants and hotels, but the beach is not as family friendly as the one in Pochomil. Most of the families go to Masachapa to have lunch on a Saturday or Sunday, because if you want to taste fresh fish, this is a great place to find it. Some of the fishermen from Masachapa go to Gran Pacifica and offer their freshly fished products to the restaurant and Gran Pacifica residents, too.
