How good are the medical centers, hospitals and health clinics in Managua, Nicaragua, and how close are they?

The best hospital in Managua is the Metropolitano. It was the 13th hospital in all of Latin America to receive the JCI accreditation. My daughter had surgery there and I go for general check ups and executive physicals as needed. Metropolitano provides top notch care at a fraction of the price of a US hospital or doctor's office.

The hospital I always go to in Managua is the Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas. It’s a world-class hospital that is accredited by the Joint Commission in the US.
Another good hospital is The Military Hospital, which is currently being expanded. It is scheduled to be done at the end of this year but I think it may not be done until probably be next year. I’m sure that once construction is finished, it will have new state-of-the-art...

You can also go to Salud Integral, which specializes in anything that has to do with the heart. It’s an excellent hospital. In fact, that’s where my brother gets his check up. Architecturally speaking, Salud Integral may not be the prettiest hospital in Managua, but any Nicaraguan who has a heart problem would go there. Personally, I would also go there if I had a heart problem.

It only takes 15 to 20 minutes to get to a medical facility, regardless of where you are in Managua, since we have several hospitals in and around Managua. Managua is a not a big city; it is only about 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) wide so in the event that you need to see a doctor, there are several hospitals where you can go. If you have an emergency, rest assured that you could get to a hospital within 10 minutes.

We have levels of healthcare here in Managua. We have public healthcare, where anybody, resident or non-resident can go; we have private clinics, which are very good; and we have hospitals, which are very good, too. There are people who are planning to retire and decide to come here to see a dentist or a specialty doctor because of the low fees that the doctors in Managua, charge. It is about 25% to 30% of what US doctors charge.
There are hospitals here in Managua that take in people with insurance. They sell the insurance here in Nicaragua to foreigners so that they can come here once or twice a year and have regular checkups for a fraction of what they would pay in the US. The two hospitals that are offering this type of service are Vivian Pellas Hospital and Hospital Bautista.
The doctors in Nicaragua go abroad to take a specialty after they finish from medical school because having a general degree in Nicaragua does not mean that much. Anyone can be a general surgeon, but many doctors in Nicaragua come with a specialty and there are even some with more than one specialty. I am confident in putting my life in their hands without second thoughts.

Today, we visited a dental clinic in Managua, Nicaragua run by a mother/daughter team, educated in the US. They of course speak very good English. What is amazing is the office set and interaction with their patients. It was a pleasure meeting them and getting our teeth cleaned for a total of US$25 per person. In the US, our was dental cleaning was US$400. I made the appointment on Monday and was able to get in on a Friday. Everything was pretty much on time - 10 minutes delay is not...

You can follow this team Jireh Dental Care on Facebook and Marissa Lolk (the daughter in the mother/daughter team) contributes frequently to Best Places in the World to Retire.
On a side note the office decor was very nice and the equipment seems to be 5-10 years old, and well maintained. The daughter also told me they are moving to a bigger location around the corner from the present location. At this new location they will be installing more computerized systems to become more patient-centric
We are aware that Granada has dental clinics but we like going to Managua since we can also go shopping and do some errands. So we combine our trips to accomplish a multitude of activities.
