Are there English-speaking doctors in Managua, Nicaragua?

Because Spanish is the first and official language in Nicaragua, you might not expect to find English-speaking doctors in Nicaragua. However, I've discovered that this is not the case. Managua is blessed with a for-profit hospital started by Vivian Pellas, the wife of one of the most influential businessmen in Nicaragua, Carlos Pellas.

Metropolitano Hospital is located on the south side of Managua, and has the second and third floors filled with general practitioners, orthopedic surgeons, OB-Gyn, dermatologists, and other specialists. Many of them are trained overseas and speak other languages than Spanish, especially English. I've had a couple of procedures done in the last few years. When you call the hospital, there is an electronic menu in English...but the English speaking attendant is sometimes at lunch, so I've timed calls away from 'break time'. After being connected to the actual doctor's office, you'll need to be prepared to give your name and make the appointment in Spanish, since most of the doctors' assistants DO NOT speak English. But once in the doctor's office, I've found patient and very articulate doctors who will take the necessary time to explain procedures and make sure that their instructions are clear.
Most of the community hospitals will NOT have English-speaking doctors, and none of the rural clinics have them. But with proper planning, access to doctors with whom you can communicate can be accomplished.

We live in Managua and we go the internationally accredited Vivian Pellas Metropolitano Hospital when we need to see a doctor. All of the doctors we have seen have been excellent and they all speak English. This includes our internist, dermatologist, eye doctor, urologist and gynecologist.
Regarding dental care, we have gone to a couple of excellent dentists who speak English for dental work and gum surgery.

There are many English-speaking doctors in Managua, since most of them have gone to the US to study a specialty. There is also a lot of English-speaking medical staff here in Managua. Our culture is very close to the American culture, so we all know that we need to know how to speak English.

There are English-speaking doctors in Nicaragua but the frequency of you meeting an English-speaking doctor depends on which city in Nicaragua you are located. My ophthalmologist in León speaks pretty good English. There are a couple or cardiologists and other specialists in León that are also well-versed in English.

Many professionals, such as doctors and lawyers, do speak English; it is just that some of them speak better than others. In general, many of them can handle a basic conversation in English.
