Most local Nicaraguans wear jeans and a clean, pressed shirt or polo shirt in Managua. Women usually don't wear shorts. In the States lots of people go to the mall or grocery store in their sweats, short shorts and flip flops. We don't see this in Managua. Even our maid wears a nice ironed blouse, make up and fancy shoes when she leaves the house.

If you are on vacation here in Managua, jeans and shorts are OK. Expats usually wear t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops, and that is fine with us. We know that it is really hot here in Nicaragua and that is why people want to dress comfortably. The dress code here in Nicaragua is nothing special like it is in parts of India, China, Peru, or Mexico. Generally, we dress the same way as the people in Miami. We go out in jeans, shorts, and t-shirts.

The weather is warm all year round here in Managua. It is about 28 to 30 degrees Celsius (82 F to 86 F) year round so you can expect people to wear loose comfortable clothing. On weekdays, when I work, I always wear long sleeved shirts, but on weekends, I change my dress code dramatically. On weekends, I dress up comfortably because of the warm weather.
If you are going to the bank, a government office, or any official business, you would dress up a bit more seriously here in Managua. Lawyers and bankers usually wear suits, long sleeved shirts, and a tie. If you are going to restaurants, you can dress any way you want. We have people who dress up a bit more when going to fancy restaurants and we also have the tourists who dress comfortably. We get 1.3 million tourists every year so that mix of people going around our city streets somewhat gives you a different impression and you’d think that all the people living here are on vacation!

Most people in Managua wear t-shirts or polo shirts every day. This is also the usual working clothes of companies. They pair the shirts with trousers and closed shoes. Ladies wear blouses or t-shirts. Many ladies also wear pants or skirts. If I were to compare the dress code in Managua to the dress code in Munich, Germany, where I come from, the way people dress here in Managua is lighter. We don’t experience freezing temperatures in Nicaragua, so people dress lightly every day. It is also nice when you walk with someone here in Nicaragua and you put your hand on their shoulders because you can actually feel their shoulder instead of just layers of clothing like people in Germany or the US wear.
Clothing also varies depending on what you do for a living. Ladies in the market wear aprons with many pockets on top of their shirts. They look very traditional and it is nice to see them. You will also see children in traditional Indian clothing during the Independence Day celebration every 15th of September. Children go to school in traditional clothing. Men wear linen shirts and trousers (both of which are white) and ladies wear skirts and linen blouses.
When at home or if they need to go out to buy something, many Nicaraguans like to wear shorts and flip flops. Men go to work in long-sleeved shirts and women dress up the same way as Americans do when they go to work in an office in Miami.
