How much do restaurants cost in Granada, Nicaragua?

When we first moved to Nicaragua, there were only a handful of restaurants available as there were not many tourists and the economy hindered most Nicaraguans from eating out. I remember the first time we visited, we almost starved because we could not find a place to eat.  Was I surprised when I ordered a cheeseburger and received a piece of American Cheese between two pieces of white bread! That all has changed drastically.

Now, restaurants in Granada, Nicaragua are abundant and varied.  You can get Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish, Mexican, Italian, Nicaraguan, Irish and American fare throughout the city. Most of the typical Nicaraguan places are a bit less expensive with meals running about US $4 or so. Most other places you can get breakfast for about $6; lunch about $10 and dinner $15 and up.  

In Granada, Nicaragua there are many restaurants where you can find competitive prices. Prices range between $7 - $10 for a decent lunch / dinner in a nice restaurant.

 

I have enjoyed dinner in a restaurant called El Zaguan which is very popular in Granada just behind the Cathedral that serves delicious grilled meat, and where there is traditional live Nicaraguan music. Excellent dinner for less than $15.

In Granada, Nicaragua, we do have a lot options for restaurants. We have different cuisines that vary from very local food to Mediterranean food. The cost of food depends exactly where you go. You can spend from US $5 to $18 in good restaurants located in the nicer areas of Granada.

You can eat in Granada, Nicaragua for a fairly cheap price. Most people will go to restaurants, but restaurants would charge US $10 to $15 per plate. There are other alternatives, which foreigners generally do not go to, but are where the locals eat. 

 

There is the "fritanga" (fried snack), which is Nicaraguan street food. People put their servings on the sidewalk and sell after four o'clock in the afternoon, but these vendors are not regulated. You...

You can get a good meal from street vendors for $3 to $5. Most places won't have a table to eat at, but there are some that do.

 

The food is usually takeaway stuff like "gallo pinto" (rice and beans), "tajadas" (plantain), chicken, or steak.  Tajadas is a nice meal composed of strips of fried plantain served with fried cheese and a salad, which costs around 60 córdobas ($2). Years ago, everything was fried like fried chicken and ''maduros" (sweet fried plantain). The menu has evolved and they now also have steaks and grilled stuff along with the fried food. 

 

Like everything here in Nicaragua, try to get a good reference from word of mouth before you go into a fritanga because sometimes you could get into a place that you would get stomach problems afterwards.

 

Fritanga is a local food, but I eat fritanga for dinner at least twice a week. It is very popular, especially in cities like Granada and Masaya, but you can get a fritanga in every city in Nicaragua. Backpackers who come to Nicaragua eat at fritangas and won't go to restaurants. 

In a restaurant, for $15 you would get a good, decent meal. In a fritanga, you eat a lot with $5 and get decent food for $2.

What the cost of restaurants are in Granada depends where you go to eat. If you go to the entertainment center also known as the Calzada, expect to pay tourists prices, which if you compare to the rest of the food available is pricey to say the least. It's best to venture outside of the Calzada.

 

We also recommend the little towns around Granada to eat at such as Diria Mirador and Catarina Mirador. Or venture out to Masaya and you will find very good food...

Or venture out to Masaya and you will find very good food at reasonable "local prices" The food options are too many to mention but we try to find a new restaurant at least once a month to try something different.  So far only one bad experience.... so go out and try Nicaragua cuisine!!! and enjoy....
