What's the language most often spoken in Granada, Nicaragua? Can I get by if I just speak English?

Spanish is the language spoken in all of Nicaragua and Granada is no different. However, since Granada is becoming a destination for tourists, more and more locals are learning to speak English.  I would advise anyone living in a foreign country to learn the language as it will open up a lot of doors and friendships that you may otherwise not have. 

 

Of course you can get by not speaking Spanish as the Nicaraguan people are very friendly and helpful....

And the ever growing number of ex-pats living in Granada will also be happy to give you a hand at whatever you need. 

 

When I first moved to Central America more than 15 years ago, I knew how to ask for a beer and a bathroom in Spanish. Of course, I could not understand the directions to the bathroom nor the price of a beer but I am still here and still learning. The scientific community says that learning a new language is a good defense against Alzheimer's and I believe it!

They will try to teach and practice speaking some Spanish words with you.

However, you also have to be cautious when you meet somebody who is very nice, kind, and charming and is readily there to give you a hand. Do not be fooled. If somebody gives you a hand, just be nice but do not be too open and give things right away.
