What's the best way to get around in Nicaragua?

The best mode of transportation in Nicaragua depends on where you are and on your destination.
In and around Managua, you need a car but you don't need to actually drive it. You can get to major destinations by bus and from there go by local taxi. It's inexpensive, not luxurious, but it works. You can easily rent cars or vans with drivers for occasional use. Or you can rent or buy a vehicle. I have a car and like to use a driver from time to time, for...

You can easily rent cars or vans with drivers for occasional use. Or you can rent or buy a vehicle. I have a car and like to use a driver from time to time, for running errands and on occasions when I may may be in a real hurry, or drink alcohol. There are very capable and responsible drivers available and the best way to find one is to talk to someone who has one. If it looks like you caused a traffic accident that results in serious injury/death, you will go to jail immediately. If you have a driver you can relax, get your errands done, and enjoy the parties without the worry of driving and possibly causing an accident.
Taxis in Managua have not had a clean record vis-a-vis passenger safety. While most are probably good, there are some rotten apples, so I advise only using taxis that someone you know has recommended.
There aren't too many options for flying within the country, except for from coast to coast, which you can easily do.

- Public transportation is also available.
León
- To get to León you have to take either a bus or a private driver will take you. It's about an hour and a half to get to the city from Managua, but once you there, you'll find it easy to walk around and discover all of its beauty.
- The price for public transportation from Managua to León is about US $4.00
Granada
- Granada is about a 45 minute drive away from Managua, so you will also need a bus or private transportation to get there. Once you arrive in Granada, the same thing will happen as when you go to León-- you will want to walk.
- The price for public transportation from Managua to Granada is about US $5.00.
San Juan del Sur
- San Juan del Sur is the most popular beach in Nicaragua. It is about a two hour drive from Managua. There's and "expreso" that goes from Managua to San Juan del Sur, and San Juan del Sur is a small city, so walking its the best way to get to know it.
- The expreso from Managua to San Juan its about US $6.00.
So as you can see, if you are on a budget you have various ways to get to know the towns of Nicaragua.

Another alternative to getting around in Nicaragua is by hiring a driver from a travel agency to drive you wherever you need to go daily, or by making arrangements with a taxi driver you have grown to trust to pick you up and drop you off wherever you want. Or you can ask a friend what drivers they could recommend.
