To drive in Nicaragua, do I need Nicaraguan automobile insurance?
Victoria Kuhl
Yes, to drive a car under your name in Nicaragua you would need to have automobile insurance. The price is around US $900 a year for good coverage. If you are just renting, the rental company will provide you with insurance for the duration of the rental.

In Nicaragua, automobile insurance is connected to the vehicle, so make sure that any vehicle you rent or borrow has all the proper documentation. There are several critical items every vehicle is required to have, and if you are pulled over by the transit police and you do not have these items you will receive a fine. Make sure any vehicle you drive has:
- Circulation Vehicular- card that shows the vehicle has current registration

- Proof of insurance
- Current Emissions sticker
- Current Rodamiento sticker
- An emergency triangle
- Fire extinguisher
I have never been asked to show the transit police the triangle or extinguisher when driving my personal vehicle, but EVERY time I am in a rental vehicle they make me show these two items.

For me, personally, I have a jeep that’s in my lawyer’s name. As a result, everything is under her; the insurance and everything. The insurance cost is US $55 every year

Yes, just like in the States, you have to have liability insurance if you want to drive in Nicaragua and it is suggested that you have full coverage because there are a lot of accidents here; more so than in the States.
In my 9 years here, I have had other vehicles crash into my car about six times and I don’t think that that would ever happen to me in the States at my age; I doubt I could say that by age 30 in the States, I would have been in six car accidents.

In all of these accidents, I never got hurt but my car did. It is because the city planning is a little bit poor and some of the streets are very narrow and there is no speed control. My mom has been here for about 6 years and she’s been in about four or five car accidents.

Yes, to drive in Nicaragua, you must have automobile insurance. However, it is not an obligation for you to get one if you have a car. For example, if you are going to rent a car, the car rental agency will have rental insurance and you must have that insurance so you could use it in case of any accidents to your car or to other cars.

There are two types of insurance here in Nicaragua. There is a full insurance that covers both your car and the car that could be affected. Depending on the kind of vehicle you buy, the cost of car full insurance varies between US $400 and $500 a year. If you don’t want to spend that amount of money on a car, you can buy a third party insurance that only covers the affected car in case of an accident between your car and another car. Third party insurance costs around $50 to $60 a year. It doesn’t cover you but it does cover the other car that might get involved in a car accident with you.
