To drive in Nicaragua, do I need a Nicaraguan driver's license?

As in any other country, in Nicaragua you can drive under your existing country's license for three months. After that time you should get your Nicaraguan license. It's not hard to get if you already have a foreign license.

No, you don't need a Nicaraguan driver's license to drive in Nicaragua. I have been living in Nicaragua for over a year and have presented my US driver's license at numerous traffic checkpoints and there has never had an issue.
In fact, according to my research you need to have residency in order to get a Nicaraguan-issued driver's license. I found some information on a Nicaragua police website that discusses the requirements for licenses,...

You can get a Nicaraguan driver’s license but it is not really necessary in order to drive here. I have been driving in Nicaragua using my Texas driver’s license for fifteen years now. Even as a permanent resident, I can drive on my Texas driver’s license. There may come a time when they will change that law and that if you live here you have to have a Nicaraguan driver’s license but that has not happened yet.
