Is there good bus service in Nicaragua?

Buses have the whole country of Nicaragua covered. A bus will go to a town that I cannot imagine how it gets there. The buses are used for transporting materials from city to city also. We, for example, ship cheese from Matagalpa, in an iced box, to Leon (a three hour drive). We pay the driver, he takes the box from my car, puts it on a seat in his bus, and my customer picks up his cheese order in Leon. In this way we have also shipped cut flowers...

Quite amazing, really.

Yes, there's great bus service in Nicaragua - better than the public transportation in Toronto, Canada, my home town. Buses come very frequently and the cost is very low. They're a great, cheap way of getting from point A to point B - especially between cities. However, you might ride on one of those old yellow school buses with the Nicaraguans. When in Nicaragua, do what the Nicaraguans do, so the saying goes. Negatives - arrive early if you want to get...

Between towns, take the tourist buses. There might be air conditioning and they get pretty crowded because they fill up the bus before it leaves.
What more privacy? Hire a taxi or a driver. Whatever your budget.

There is a great bus network in Nicaragua. It is possible to get to just about anywhere by bus; even the remote parts of the country are accessible.
When traveling between major locations, there are two options, the standard large busses, or if you are willing to pay just a little more you can take the Microbus, which stops less and will get you to and from major locations quicker.

Yes, there is bus service in Nicaragua. There are buses everywhere.
There are big buses (like "chicken buses" - old school buses; pictured to the left) and there are also minibuses that can seat 10 people or so. The buses here in Nicaragua are safe, I've found.
Buses cost about US $1 for a 20-mile or 20-25-minute ride from Leon to the beach. A $4 bus ride (approximately) can take you from Managua up north to the communities...
