How corrupt are the police in Nicaragua? Do I need to bribe the police in Nicaragua?
Mike Cobb - ECI Development
I have lived in Nicaragua for 11 years and have never paid a bribe. If you break the law, take the ticket and pay the fine. Bribery corrupts two people, the giver and the taker. I don’t want to be corrupted. As a libertarian, however, I believe it’s a personal choice, although the perpetuation of corruption does hurt everyone in society at some level or in some small way.

I wouldn’t say that corruption is a major issue in Nicaragua and I wouldn’t also say that there is no corruption. Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the entire Western hemisphere and where there is poverty there is a tendency for corruption.
What we tell investors is that there might a public officer that is corrupt, but if this happens to you, never agree to any corruption and always abide the national legislation. If you do...

What we tell investors is that there might a public officer that is corrupt, but if this happens to you, never agree to any corruption and always abide the national legislation. If you do that, you ensure that your rights are properly protected, in the sense that if there is any issue that might arise from any kind of interaction, if you did comply with the legislation with the correct procedure, then justice will be on your side.
There was a survey on bribes in a report published by the United Nations Development Program, or the UNDP. It’s called the 2013-2014 Regional Human Development Report and that report has a survey or index on corruption, specifically on bribery solicitation by government officials. The result was that Nicaragua has the lowest incidence of corruption in the entire Latin American region. After Nicaragua, there’s Chile, Panama, Uruguay and Brazil. Those are the following countries. Even though corruption is something you’re prone to find in a country with the level of economic development that we have, if you compare us to other countries with perhaps a lot more developed economies, the incidence of corruption here in Nicaragua is almost nothing. As mentioned before, Chile is number 2 on the index. You’re comparing the economy and the situation of Nicaragua to the same situation as Chile and we are better off as a country with lower level of incidence in corruption.

Police corruption in Nicaragua is like everywhere else in the world. It is less in this country than in Mexico and Guatemala, but there is police corruption. The police in Nicaragua are not extremely crazy, but they ask for bribes all the time, especially when you get a ticket while driving.

However, when you start a business, you don't need to worry about the police asking for payment. They mostly ask for bribes for traffic violations. They only stop you when you do something stupid on the road like speeding because they now have radars to check on the speed of cars. If you haven't done anything and your papers are okay, then you will not be pulled over.
It doesn't matter to the Nicaraguan police if you are an expat or a local. They will stop anyone who violates traffic laws.
