Are there English-speaking doctors in Nicaragua?
Mike Cobb - ECI Development
There are a large number of doctors who speak English in Nicaragua, especially in Managua. English is the primary 2nd language for medicine in the region.

From personal experience I can say that there are many English-speaking doctors in Managua, Nicaragua. I have had cataract surgery and arthroscopic knee surgery performed by physicians at Hospital Metropolitano. Both spoke English very well. My internist, also at Metropolitano, speaks fluent English. I am, at present, undergoing a dental implant and the three dentists all speak English. I speak very little Spanish, so I appreciate the fact that so...

A very large percentage of the doctors at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas (the state of the art hospital in Managua) had some training in the US; perhaps greater than 50%. As a result, all of these doctors in Nicaragua speak English, as well as quite a few of the other doctors.

If you live in Managua (which is where Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas is located), Granada (less than an hour away by car), San Juan del Sur (an hour and forty-five minutes away by car), or Leon (about an hour and a half away by car), you are more than close enough to make Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas your primary hospital. As a result, you will be able to find lots of English-speaking doctors in Nicaragua.

Yes, there are English speaking doctors in Nicaragua but most of course speak Spanish as their first language. Many of the doctors I have seen during my 10 years living in Nicaragua do require me to speak in Spanish at least a little bit to get my point across. There are plenty of forums and groups that can direct you to a doctor or dentist who can speak English well.

My family has had great success with Vivian Pellas Metropolitano Hospital in Managua. Managua is the capital of Nicaragua. The hospital feels similar to a hospital you would find in the United States and for the most part the service you receive there may be better. A private hospital setting and at an affordable cost. They do have health care plans but we have always paid out of pocket.
My first son was born at Vivian Pellas Hospital with Dr. Walter Mendieta and assisted by Pediatrician Dr. Fernando Silva. Both spoke a fair amount of English. Great bed side manner too. I also had an appendectomy several years later and it was done laparoscopically with another amazing surgeon Dr. Abdula. Both experiences were positive and affordable. The doctors call personally to check on you as well. Very surprising to me.
We live in San Juan del Sur, which is a two hour drive to Managua but for good health care it is worth the drive.
So, YES! English speaking doctors can be found in Nicaragua and I must add that in my experience the majority of doctors at Vivian Pellas Hospital are qualified and caring as well.

Most doctors in Nicaragua are English-speaking. Sometimes the nurses aren’t, but the doctors generally are. English is very common in Nicaragua now, so those who don’t speak English at least understand it. It’s rare to find someone in the medical field who doesn’t speak some English.

Yes, there are English-speaking doctors in Nicaragua. About 15% of the doctors here can speak perfect English and a lot of Nicaraguans, in general, do speak English.
There wouldn’t be a problem in finding an English-speaking doctor or dentist here. If you go to the high quality doctor offices, usually, you will find English-speaking doctors. Overall, a lot of people in Nicaragua who are in the medical field do speak English.
