Are the doctors in Nicaragua good?
Mike Cobb - ECI Development
Doctors in Nicaragua are generally good and will be excellent depending on training and experience. Rural areas will have excellent doctors who see tropical diseases and broken bones. Urban doctors will have more experience with heart disease, cancer, and special cases because people from rural areas come to the cities for specialized treatment.

I have lived in Nicaragua for 17 years and during this time I have had arthroscopic knee surgery due to running cross country for many years. The surgery was very well done and one tenth of the cost in the USA. I continue to run with no further problems.
I also had multi focal lens implants a few years ago at 30% of the USA costs and my eye sight improved so much that I no longer need to wear glasses.

In Nicaragua there are very highly trained doctors with modern equipment and the majority speak English as well. I have seen more and more North Americans coming to Nicaragua for medical care and be very satisfied with the care and results.

We have very good doctors in Nicaragua. Fairly recently, Nicaragua started to promote itself as a destination for health tourism. A lot of Americans and Nicaraguan-Americans who live in the United States come here to Nicaragua to have certain surgeries performed because it is so much cheaper than having these surgeries done in the United States.

In Nicaragua, we have very good doctors, for example, in plastic surgery, which is famous now. Among the most popular medical specialties, we have doctors for dentistry, dental surgery and orthopedists. We also have medical doctors here for bariatric surgery.
Relative to the training our doctors receive in Nicaragua, we have a recognized national university where many famous doctors have graduated. After graduation and finishing their general studies, quite a few of them go overseas to the United States and to other places like Mexico and even Europe, to do more studies in their area of specialization.
The most famous university in Nicaragua for medical studies (and also the oldest university in Nicaragua) is the national University of Leon. We also have other good universities for medical studies, such as the American University (La Universidad Americana).
There largest concentration of good doctors in Nicaragua is in Managua, but we also have good doctors in places like Leon and Granada. The reason for this is that the main hospitals are in Managua, so the physicians tend to have their clinics in the same area. You will find a few physicians living and working in Leon and Granada.

The Nicaraguan-trained doctors are very good (and I speak with the perspective of knowing the medical care system in Miami, Florida). The Nicaraguan doctors about my age went to medical school in Leon, which is one of the best medical schools in Central America, and one to which people come to study from many foreign countries. Afterwards, a very large percentage of Nicaraguan doctors do at least some study in the US.

The doctors in Nicaragua are great. As part of my job, I work with doctors, including surgeons, anesthesiologists and pediatricians.
In Nicaragua, the doctors want to help out and have a great interest in the wellbeing of their patients. The medical people I work with are always very interested in following protocols and in doing what is best for the patients. I have seen this many, many times. Regardless of any other considerations, the doctors I have...

(Please see my answer regarding the hospitals in Nicaragua for a more complete answer regarding the quality of doctors in Nicaragua.)

Based on my experience dealing with healthcare in many part of the world, including Canada (where I’m from) and in Nicaragua, yes, the doctors in Nicaragua are good. Go to them, tell them your symptoms, and they'll prescribe you medicine, just like anywhere else in the world. You'll pay less than UDS $20 for an appointment- medical care is cheaper in Nicaragua.

In Nicaragua, the doctors are good because we have a lot of medical schools scattered around the country. In addition, many of the doctors in Nicaragua studied abroad. Numerous doctors moved back from the US during the ‘90s so there are no issues with the language because they speak English, which I think is very important when dealing with the doctors.

In general, there is no problem with the doctors in Nicaragua getting the right diagnosis. However, there are types of surgeries that are not readily available in Nicaragua just because the equipment is not here. To give you an example, my brother, about 3 years ago, was diagnosed here in Nicaragua with aneurysm in his aorta. We brought him to the US for a delicate surgery that could not be done here. When we got to the US, we went to the Cleveland clinic. The American doctors examined my brother and came up with exactly the same diagnosis and treatment plan as did the doctors here in Nicaragua.
What this means is that most of the doctors in Nicaragua are capable of coming up with the correct diagnosis and doing these delicate procedures because many of them performed the same procedures before while they were working in the US. What our Nicaraguan doctors don’t have in Nicaragua is the right equipment and facilities in order to do these procedures here.

The doctors in Nicaragua are excellent! In Managua we have a top rated certified Hospital named Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas.
Mostly if not all the doctors at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas speak English and there is a personal factor in their approach to patients. The medical equipment is top of the line from Phillips. People who I know have had cardio exams there and have been happy with the personnel as well as the accuracy of the medical equipment. My...

The doctors in Nicaragua are definitely good, and cheap, too.
All the doctors study in Miami, but they practice here in Nicaragua. You get your medical education from Miami or other places in the United States, but you practice here at about 70 percent less cost.
For example, a consultation here is around $45. My mom told me that it is $450 just for a consultation in the States. Her spine operation costs around $8,000 here in Nicaragua. In the US, it would have...

In the US, it would have been $120,000. My friend had his first kid in New York. The entire birth cost him about $41,000. Here, my first child cost $2, 300. All these prices are before insurance.
The quality of healthcare in Nicaragua is the same as you would expect in New York or Miami. Maybe it is better in the US for some things, but what you get here is more than enough and more than what you need. You would be surprised how many people come to Nicaragua for medical care.

There are excellent doctors in Nicaragua. Nicaragua has an excellent hospital built by the Pellas family, which is one of the nicest hospitals I’ve ever been in anywhere. The doctor that I see went to medical school in France and finished up in Acapulco. Many doctors in Nicaragua have gone to medical school overseas. Nicaragua also has a good relationship with Cuba, so there are doctors in Nicaragua who have come over from Cuba as well.

The last time I was in Granada, I had an accident where I cut my foot open. I was under the care of a doctor who was from Cuba. Nicaragua has a very good set of doctors, especially in Managua. If you get into the biggest cities, like Granada, they’ve also got excellent doctors. The best doctors are found in the big cities.
The care that I’ve received in Nicaragua is like anywhere. There are great doctors all over the world, just as there are also not-so-great doctors. You go through a handful of these doctors and find one that you think is good. It was the same in San Diego as it is for me in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. As an example, my wife broke her hand, and we had a hand specialist who attended Harvard. Nicaragua has excellent doctors.
A doctor is someone who obviously needs to be trained and go to a medical school, but should also be someone who cares for the patients. It’s a matter of finding the doctor who cares. We found quite a few caring doctors in Nicaragua and have been very happy.
