Are taxis readily available in Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc, and what do taxis cost in Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc?
Mitch Keenan - Mexico International Real Estate
Yes, taxis are available in Yucatan. A typical trip in town (for example, in Merida), will run you anywhere from 40-100 pesos (US $2 - $7).
There is also an extensive bus system throughout the state of Yucatan and the entire country. First class buses are very comfortable with reclining seats, reading lights, movies and bathrooms.

Wade Yarchan - Yucatan Beach Homes
There are taxis everywhere in Yucatan.
Recently, we took a flight into Cancun. Then we took an ADO bus (which is the big, luxury bus) from Cancun to Merida (3 hours away), which is a very popular thing to do here. The cost to take an ADO depends on which level of bus you take. You can get the low level, which is around $2.95. You can get the higher level for about $35 for a one-way trip.

Then I took a taxi from downtown Merida to here at the beach in Yucatan, which is around 20 miles away, and it cost me $24 to $30. It’s very reasonable. In Sarasota, Florida, I lived about three miles away from the airport and it cost me $20 for the taxi.

There are lots of taxis available in the state of Yucatan that are cheap. From here to Centro (the downtown area of Merida), which is a 15-20 minute trip if the traffic is bad, taxis will charge 100 pesos ($5). That same taxi ride in Canada would cost around $70. Most of the taxis in Yucatan have meters, but there’s one company that doesn’t have a meter and just charges by area instead.

Uber is popular now among many people, and it’s cheaper than taxis. For example, from the airport to the hacienda where I live, I usually pay taxis 350 pesos ($17), but taking Uber from the airport to the hacienda costs 123 pesos ($6). I haven’t taken Uber from the hacienda to Centro, but my neighbors Jane and Andy did, and they said it cost them 79 pesos ($4).
There are also what we call the 'tricy taxis’ (three-wheeled taxis). We take them when going into the next village, and sometimes I take them when I go shopping. The tricy taxis are available in all small towns, but aren’t as common in the center of Merida because it’s a very busy place. The tricy taxis are like the ‘tuktuks’ in Thailand. They’re just little taxis- a motorcycle with a box on the front that you ride on. Some of the times the guys (drivers) pedal, but now most of the tricy taxis are motorized.
