What are the best things to do in and around Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc?

It’s tough to pinpoint the best things to do in Yucatan because you could do whatever you want, as little or as much; wherever you want in the Yucatan. The ruins here are just incredible. The cultural history and the ancient history of the Yucatan is just amazing. If you love investigating you could go to the cenotes, the caves, ruins, and day trips that you could take almost anywhere.
 
Cancun is just fun. You can go wind surfing, whale watching, water skiing, scuba...

Cancun is just fun. You can go wind surfing, whale watching, water skiing, scuba diving, etc. We don’t have as much of that here in Yucatan. We are just not built up enough.
 
Merida is a cultural hotspot because Merida was founded in 1543 so there is lots of history and culture there. You can just walk in Merida for days and you can’t even see half of what’s there.

Some of the best things to do in the Yucatan are to go to the beach, go to the haciendas, visit the Mayan ruins, explore the caves and the cenotes (famous sinkholes), and go bird watching. You can also watch some wild animals in their habitat. In town, you can go to the parks, the zoos, see spectacular architecture, go on home tours, and experience lots of restaurants, clubs, and nightlife. There is a ton of things to do in and around the Yucatan. I do not know which of these is the best.

Personally, I do not like the beach because I do not like sand but I like seafood, so I like to go to sit near the beach, eat and look out at it.  It’s pretty. I like going in the cenotes because they are beautiful and have crystalline waters. They are refreshing and it’s just very nice to swim in the cenotes. 
 
Architecture is one of my first loves, so going out to see the old abandoned haciendas is one of the things that catches my attention. Even just driving around town and looking at the fabulous architecture is very enjoyable. All the cities in the Yucatan have great colonial architecture. All the churches here are spectacular. They were all built by the Spaniards back in the 1800s. Overall, great architecture in the Yucatan is beautiful and examples of it are everywhere.
