Is there good fishing in and around Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc?

There is incredible fishing on the Rio in Yucatan. We are on an island. We have the Gulf of Mexico in front of us and the Rio behind us, which is the river. There is a lot of bass fishing on the river. On the coast, you can go deep-sea fishing.
On this side of the Yucatan, we don’t do a lot of deep-sea fishing but we do offshore fishing for grouper and some other types of fish. The offshore fishing here in the Yucatan Riviera is very good. On the other coasts, you can do...

There is a lot of fishing in the Yucatan Peninsula, which is mostly done on the Caribbean side. In Cancun (which is on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula), there are wonderful places to go fishing such as in Isla Mujeres, and right in front of Playa del Carmen. That area of the Caribbean is good for fishing because of the depth of the ocean. You can go up to 500 feet into the water and the water is still very shallow, but then it drops off. That area of the Caribbean is good for fishing because of the depth of the ocean. You can go up to 500 feet into the water and the water is still very shallow, but then it drops off. The currents are very nice and the type of fishing is very attractive.
There are also areas where you can go fly fishing, which is very interesting. You can do fly-fishing on the Riviera Maya (also on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula) near Tulum where there are nice and well-known areas where you can fish for Grand Slams. Off the island of Holbox (also on the Caribbean), you can go deep-sea fishing, you can fish in the lagoon, and you can also do fly-fishing and catch tarpons. You can also get Grand Slams in Holbox. One of the main activities that Holbox has is diving with whale sharks. Whale sharks come to that area in June up to September. It’s a unique experience. We have first class fishing on the Caribbean.
When you go to the state of Yucatan, which is on the Gulf coast, there is still fishing but it is not the same as fishing in the areas I mentioned above. In other areas of Yucatan, you can go deep sea fishing but the platform is very wide that you have to go a long way before you get to the deep part of the ocean. There are nicer areas for fishing in Yucatan but they are very far away. Local fishermen have depleted most of the coastal areas so it is hard to get a good fishing expedition in the Yucatan area. When you go to the state of Campeche (on the Gulf coast), you will find it to be mostly the same as in the state of Yucatan. There are some areas there for fly-fishing but it is basically the same.
There are very nice reefs in the Yucatan. One of them is called Arrecifes Alacranes, which means “Scorpion Reef” in English. It was named so because the reef looks like a scorpion and it is beautiful. It is located 70 nautical miles from Progreso, which is a fishing village due north of Merida in the state of Yucatan. If you are a fisherman, you will enjoy it there because there is great fishing. There is also great diving and the views are breathtaking.

Fishing is very popular in Yucatán. In the state of Quintana Roo (includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and here in Akumal there is very good fishing. When you go up to Tulum, you’ll see fishermen standing on big rocks and fishing. All of the restaurants in Tulum only serve fresh seafood every day. Tulum is a really nice place for fishermen. You can also go fishing in the entire Riviera Maya area, from Cancun to Tulum.

Is the pope Catholic? The answer is, yes there’s great fishing here for a wide variety of species, either by hand-line or big game rod ‘n reel style. Charter boats are everywhere. Just peruse Trip Advisor for the best reviews, etc. You'll enjoy a fun day in the fresh salt air and take home your own "catch of the day."
