How's the golf in and around Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc?
Denis Larsen - Casa Hamaca Guesthouse
The golf in Valladolid, Yucatan, Mexico is non-existent; absolutely non-existent. A few years ago, we looked into putting in a miniature golf course, both for local kids and visiting tourists. All the numbers looked really great until we got down to finding a piece of property that we liked. It didn’t make economic sense what people wanted for the property. We didn’t want to rent because if we were successful, the owner could say, “Okay, your lease is up, goodbye,...

The Cancun area of Mexico particularly has a number of golf courses. A hazard though, that’s not found in many places, are crocodiles. Cancun, of course, doesn’t like to publicize crocodile attacks, but it does happen with golfers. It doesn’t seem to happen in Merida. There have been a fairly large developments built around a golf course in and around Merida. There are some recognizable names in golf courses. There are at least one or two Arnold Palmer courses and Jack Nicklaus courses in Cancun and Merida. You’ve got plenty of options.
Golf is on the decline in the US. There are more courses closing every year than there are opening. I had actually looked into that at one point, of building a golf course somewhere in the Valladolid area because my son-in-law builds artificial greens in New Jersey with a product that’s made in Florida and made to stand up to the sun, humidity and everything else. We just decided that there is just not enough call for it.
There is a polo field. There are a big money in both places, Cancun and Merida, so they can attract things like a polo field.

The state of Quintana Roo (includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and here in Akumal has amazing golf courses. Bahia Principe comes with a golf residence, so we are surrounded by a golf course called Robert Trent Jones II, named after the golfer who designed the golf course. The views from the golf course are amazing, like green, lush grass that blends in with the jungle. Golfing is an amazing sport for people who come around Quintana Roo.

Yes, there are a lot of golf courses in Quintana Roo. Most of the residential communities that are big have a golf course within the community because of its high rates of tourism, which means they also have a lot of hotels.
One of the best things to do in Quintana Roo is go golfing in this region. There are more than 10 golf courses in 130 kilometers of the Riviera Maya. If you go from Cancun to Tulum, you’ll find many different golf courses.
