How's the ecotourism in and around Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc.?
Alfonso Galindo - I Go Yucatan
Eco-tourism has been growing in Yucatan as it has in many other areas. Eco-tourism is being promoted throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, and especially in the Yucatan state of Quintana Roo. They have these great nature parks now that go through cenotes (naturally occurring sinkholes for which Yucatan is famous), underground cavern systems, zip lines, etc. We have sports fishing. Yucatan is world-renowned for birding. There are over 200 some species that can only be seen in the Yucatan Peninsula. But over 500 varieties of birds can be viewed here in Yucatan peninsula. Birding in Yucatan is becoming quite attractive to tourists from around the world. Also, you can never discount the thousand and thousands of Mayan archeological sites. You could go to one every day and I don’t think you’d barely scratch a surface.
There is also the eco-tourism that’s meant to raise the standard of living for the lower economic areas, essentially the Mayan villages. With the help of NGOs, government, and private money, they’ve been able to help some of these Mayan communities promote some of their local and natural attractions, including lagoons, birding, and the reserves—some of which have flamingos. Other villages might have a cenote on their property. These villages have been helped by various organizations to add picnic tables, offer camping, or renting Mayan homes, all with the purpose of bringing tourists to the area and help bring these villages out of poverty.

Ecotourism is a growing segment of the tourism market of the Yucatan.
Here in the Yucatan, we have a lot of activities related to ecotourism for people to do. There are enormous caverns, where you can drop down in and go spelunking. You can also go to the cenotes (world famous sinkholes), which are also fabulous and beautiful.

You may also go to some abandoned haciendas. There is so much ecotourism here that you are not going to live long enough to see and experience it all. The people who are working in the tourism industry here are also aware that ecotourism is a much cleaner form of tourism than high impact tourism.
