There’s an insane amount of wildlife and birds out here in Yucatan. We’ve got areas you can see flamingos in the wild. Five minutes from where I live in Playa del Carmen, there’s a gated community called Playacar, where I’ve seen toucans in the trees. In our little neighborhood here, we’ve got a family of five parrots that I think live in the neighborhood. Besides birds, we have spider monkeys. (Playacar is a gated community at the south end of Playa Del Carmen. It is a residential neighborhood with a golf course and a hotel along the beach. We have more species of birds in Yucatan than United States and Canada have combined. There is beautiful plumages and colors and types. We are famous for the vast numbers of beautiful flamingos here that are everywhere. We also have every kind of stork that you can think of. We have all kinds of parrots as well. There are lots of birds in the Yucatan so bird watching is definitely a big pastime here. The birds are everywhere. (Yucatan Jay, Yucatan, Mexico, pictured.)

If you like bird-watching, the Yucatan would be a good place. Merida has a bird watching festival every year, and there are many different species of birds that are both indigenous and migratory. We were watching Baltimore Orioles building a nest in the yard this morning.
There are many types of owls in Yucatan, as well as many types of parrots. For example, there’s toh, which is a native and beautiful colored bird.
