Can I buy furniture in Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc?
Mitch Keenan - Mexico International Real Estate
You can buy furniture in Yucatan most everywhere, but especially in Merida. There are tons of furniture stores all over the city and in most of the mega-malls around the city.
It is also very reasonable to have furniture custom made. Most types of hard woods, aggregates, stone, iron, aluminum, fabrics and marbles are available here. The pricing for most of these materials is much more reasonable here than in many other areas of North America.

Yes, you can buy furniture in the Yucatan Peninsula and there are very nice stores here. You can find furniture here that are for different purposes such as the ones used for the beach, furniture for the home, etc. We also have interior designers that are great. Handmade furniture is also available in Yucatan. Another thing that is known here in Yucatan are the pasta tile floors. These are tiles that are of antique design but are very common in Yucatan. Most expats here love pasta tile floors because they are just beautiful. Expats fall in love with things that are common to the Yucatecan architecture. There are also lots of handicrafts in the area. Yucatan is well known for that.
The prices of furniture here in Yucatan vary depending on its type. There are also some people that you can go to and have them make furniture for you. You can just give them the design that you want and they will make it for you. I have seen interior designers who are quite impressed by the craftsmanship of the people here. They say, “If we have this kind of furniture done in the US, it will cost a fortune.” A lot of expats have taken advantage of that because they have seen that there is a huge potential in the furniture industry. There are lots of people here in Yucatan who work very well making furniture for a fraction of the cost if it were to be made in the US. Most of the furniture here in Mexico are made of wood and other fibers. We don’t use a lot of leather because it is too hot.

You can buy beautiful handmade furniture in Yucatan at a low price, or you can buy very expensive handmade furniture at a high price. There’s furniture available everywhere. There aren’t as many furniture stores here as there are in Canada, but there’s probably more private furniture makers here in Yucatan. You can get furniture made at a better price compared to Canada- about a third of the cost. You can get good quality handmade furniture depending on the person...

I had a beautiful, very antique-looking four-poster bed made for around $400, that costs about $2,000 or more in Canada.
Whenever I need a piece of furniture here in Yucatan, I would sometimes go to antique stores. Now, mostly because there are all kinds of furniture pages on Facebook, I can just shop online and find all kinds of antiques at a good price. I can look at the pictures, call the people, and pick up the furniture or have them delivered. There are some pretty reasonable antique prices in Merida.
